Zoe's eyes scan the digital schematics, her finger tracing the energy conduits of Bluto's revised Hunchback design. A faint frown creases her brow as she spots the discrepancy.

"Bluto," she says, "I like the ambition, but you've got the XL engines in both designs set for double heat sinks, twenty per engine. We don't have that much. Our standard XLs only come with ten sinks."

She taps a few keys, and the engine configurations for both the Thunderbolt and the proposed Hunchback-turned-Huntsman instantly correct on the screen, the available heat sink numbers adjusting to reflect reality.

"The good news," she continues, a slight upward quirk to her lips, "is we do have twelve double heat sinks salvaged from that Rifleman. So we can definitely adjust these designs to incorporate those and manage the heat from all those new weapons. Let's look at these again with that in mind."

She adjusts her own design, and takes on board Bluto's suggestion. Zoe's fingers dance across the datapad, the Hunchback schematic shifting with her adjustments. "Dropping the jets is a sound idea, Bluto," she says, a nod of approval in his direction. "Huntsman it is." The jump jet modules vanish from the design, the available tonnage instantly reallocated. "We'll use that freed-up space and mass to manage the heat instead. It'll be a runner, not a jumper, but it'll hit like a proper predator."

"If we go ahead with this, I will oversee the build and try to have the original Hunchback look preserved to, as you say, trick enemies into making fatal miscalculations."

"Okay, so for the Huntsman," Zoe muses, her finger hovering over the schematic. "Here is an alternative. Less heat and more power. Wonder if I can top that? Bluto wonders.

He's now thoroughly enjoying the design process, and taps away at the datapad. He's got a grander vision: his own prized Grasshopper, a hefty 75-ton brute, as the canvas for his masterpiece.

He tries to make his 'Hopper as fast as Zoe's proposed Huntsman, punching in a Walk Rank of 6. The datapad immediately shrieks an error at him, and flashes red. No engine in the Inner Sphere can handle such a load.

"Fine, fine," he mutters, reluctantly settling for a Walk Rank of 5, still a significant upgrade for his heavy 'Mech, and matching the new Thunderbolt's specifications.

Next, he swaps out the existing Large Laser for the longer-reaching ER Large Laser, then gleefully adds an additional Medium Laser, bringing his Grasshopper's total complement to six. Not content, he upgrades the modest LRM5 launcher to a formidable LRM15.

To magically pay for all this firepower, he unilaterally scraps the jump jets – as Lord Faus suggested earlier. "Hopper won't fly anymore," he declares with a decisive jab with his thick calloused fingers – and slots in the XL engine, a component still to be allocated to either the Huntsman or this monstrosity.

He leans back, admiring his creation on the screen. "Yeah," he says, a satisfied grin spreading across his face. "This might be just the ticket. I think I'll rename her Cricket!"

"Armour is about a ton short of maxed. You could take half a ton of LRM ammo instead to shore that up. Doubt you'll be sending many LRM salvo's anyway." He considers making the cockpit smaller to save a ton, and decides against it. "Cockpit's gotta stay normal size, or you'll have no room for the beer cooler."

"Which you reckon is best guys? Huntsman or Cricket." He looks at James, "You'll probably gonna be driving the thing, what do ya reckon?"

During the downtime Bluto makes an important call:

"Hello? Yeah, this is... uh a guy. Just calling about something. Look, did you guys, uh, happen to get a big anonymous donation, like, recently? 100K, that's what you're supposed to get for the good work you do for the little ones."

(If they confirm receipt)

"Oh, good! Yeah, that's just great. Glad to hear it got where it was supposed to go. Listen, I was also wondering, would you ever be open to having some volunteers come down and help out? You know, servicemen, good with kids, maybe got themselves retired a bit early from the DDF thanks to some bumps and bruises. Folks who are looking to give back. They ain't fit for combat sorties anymore, but they're more than able to handle, uh, a squad of kiddies. If you'd be willing to take 'em on, I reckon I could spread the word and get some good help your way."

(If they ask who he is)

"Me? Oh, just... Sir B-." He almost lets his name slip, and glances around, his eyes landing on a nearby beer bottle. B is for Beer. Yeah that will work. "Yeah, Sir B. Alright, thanks for your time!"

(He quickly hangs up before they can ask anything else.)

Bluto then punches in Carver's comm code.

"Hey Carver, Blutanski here. Yeah, yeah, salvage is all good, thanks for covering for us." Bluto replies, getting straight to it. "Listen, I was wondering, have you had a chance to, uh, put a bug in Blackmon's ear? About that orphanage thing? The one I mentioned?" He waits, a little anxiously, for Carver's reply. "Figured it might be a good fit for him, you know? Might head there myself to look around, but Zoe's got me on this trainer training thing, it's doin my head in."

For Santiago:

The COMSTAR center happily sends your message. As long as your message was not encrypted it was only 70 C-Bills to send the message. The cute COMSTAR rep gives him a smile, "Thank you sir. It should reach its destination in 3 to 5 days. Unless this was a rush order? No? Ok. Thank you for trusting COMSTAR with your business. May the Word of Blake Bless your path.

Santiago then busies himself with attempting to customize his families mech. While he does have a slight pang of guilt, it's quickly overridden by the knowledge that in customizing it will truly become worthy of the De la Vega house.

For Zoe:

As you work through your injury you find that you have more focus as recovery would have driven you mad with its lack of stimulation, looking over telemetry data and routes gives your mind something to do.
You discover from the enemy mech’s ROMs that they were in an underground area for staging. You get they were loaded up into the dropship that you saw them get dropped off in. There is something else there as well. Buried in one ROM you get a small bit of a fuzzy image. It looks like a Majesty Metals crest on the wall. It’s only there for a moment, but you are certain you saw it in the background. Given how prevalent Majesty Metals is on the planet, it could be an abandoned facility or it could be operational. The crest on the wall was your only indication, and it’s not enough to really accuse them of anything outright.

The telemetry is a harder nut to crack. The intermittent signals indicate the pilot was extremely good. Maybe James's level. He was able to keep the craft below most of the sensor stations and in their blind spots as much as possible. Though this and the LosTech points to a very well equipped and skilled pirate force.
(Roll Protocol and Strategy checks)

For Bluto:

Your call to the orphanage is well received. The lady who answers is elated at the donation, ”Sir Be. Yes we received your donation. I must say it was quite a substantial amount. This should allow us to continue to operate for at least another two years on that donation alone.” Her voice rings like a bell and Bluto feels a little warmth spread through him, ”We always have room for volunteers. Occasionally they can even land full time positions should they demonstrate a good aptitude with children. We appreciate the donation Sir Be. I don’t suppose I could convince you to make an appearance could I? It's ok. It sounds like you value your privacy and I shant pry any more. Again thank you so very much. May the Word of Blake protect you.”

Bluto hangs up and dials Carver up. Bluto’s psyched that he has a good lead for Blackmon. However, that soon fades as the line rings twice before Bluto hears a set of three ascending tones followed by a dry mechanical female voice. It's not the same as the mech, it's more impersonal and much harsher, ”We’re Sorry. The number you have dialed is currently outside the coverage area. If you think you’ve reached this message in error please hang up and try again.”

Bluto is not sure what to make of the message. Bluto does check the number dialed against the number given and they both match. Might be that Carver is in a place where he doesn’t have access to his comms.

For Everyone:

CPT Fisher appears as the comms screen opens while everyone is sitting in the lounge. ”Ah. Good you’re all here.” He smiles and frowns at the same time. It's quite an odd expression. ”First I wanted to extend my congratulations on a job well done with defending Lord Faus. The head of Technicron Engineering has decided to provide Zoe and Bluto with a bonus.” He motions behind himself and for the first time you can see he’s standing in the Phoenix mech bay. What he motions to you leaves your jaws on the floor. Two pristine new mechs stand behind him. An Archer and Marauder. From what you can see the Archer seems to have two LRM 15s and two Lasers in its arms. The Marauder has a freaking Gauss rifle sticking off its side! And it looks like there are three laser emitters on each arm.
CPT Fisher smiles from ear to ear, ”I present the Archer ‘Z’ to Zoe. It has an experimental XL 280 engine, two LRM15s, and a pair of ER Large Lasers. It also has 17 Double heat sinks to offset the weapon’s heat generation. Perfect for Zoe as the commander of the lance.” CPT Fisher nods to Zoe before he clears his throat and continues, ”The Marauder ‘B’ is Bluto’s, it has an XL 300 engine, an improved Gauss Rifle, a pair of ER Large Lasers, and 4 Medium lasers. The Marauder has 15 Double heat sinks to make the mech heat neutral at long range.” CPT Fisher steps aside so the screen can show the two new mechs in all their glory. They practically shine. Even though everyone knows they are refurbished, the work that was done on them, they might as well be factory new.

After a moment, CPT Fisher’s face darkens, ”That was the good news, now the bad. Gamma and Lord Faus have disappeared. After they confirmed they were approaching the mine, we lost contact with them. I know it’s been three days, but Faus had a two day period blocked off to inspect the mine. As of now, they are 26 hours past due for a check in and we have not been able to raise them.” Bluto now understands why he couldn’t raise Carver. ”Zoe, I know you’re still recovering from your injuries. I won’t blame you if you want to turn this down and focus on your recovery, but given your history with Gamma I wanted to provide your team with the first crack at finding them.” CPT Fisher looks at everyone awaiting their response.

Zoe: All fatigue damage is gone. You still have 2 Lethal damage. Your current medications will reduce physical TN penalties from 3 to 1 for 4 hours. You can take the medication safely twice a day. Any more and you risk addiction.

Zoe stares at the comms screen, her jaw hanging open just like everyone else's. The surprise is so complete, so utterly unexpected, that for a moment, the throbbing of her burns fades into the background. An Archer and a Marauder! They look impossibly new, shimmering with a polish that speaks of meticulous refurbishment, far beyond any DDF standard she's seen.

Then Fisher speaks again, and the words hit her like physical blows, each one dislodging another piece of her disbelief. "The Archer 'Z' to Zoe." An experimental XL engine? Two LRM15s? ER Large Lasers and seventeen Double Heat Sinks? It's a commander's dream, a mobile fortress of precision firepower. Her mind immediately begins to churn with tactical possibilities.

A flush of warmth spreads through her, part shock, part profound gratitude. Technicron Engineering, or rather, Lord Faus, clearly valued them. This is not just a bonus; it is a statement. It is a potent weapon, a symbol of trust. She finds herself nodding almost imperceptibly, a quiet acknowledgment of the incredible gift, already picturing herself in the cockpit, the familiar controls now commanding an entirely new level of destructive potential. The burn in her skin is still there, but now, a new kind of fire ignites in her eyes.

I must be dreaming.

No. I am having a nightmare.

The bad news hits Zoe like a physical blow and her eyes widen with the shock of it. She looks down a moment, thinking. No. Never. If I had not said I was unable to continue Gamma and Faus might still be safe. I should have... I do not even know how they were taken, I have to ask.

Her head snaps up, her eyes blazing with an intensity that seems to momentarily eclipse the pain from her burns. The idea of turning down this mission is utterly preposterous. It is almost insulting.

"Absolutely not, Captain," she states, her voice firm, leaving no room for argument. "My injuries are manageable. I am still fully capable of piloting a Mech or an aerospace fighter. Burns be damned."

"How did this happen? Did Lord Faus reach the mine? Were they all taken from their beds or on the road to the mine? Are Gamma Lance's mechs gone with them? Was there a battle?"

She waits for an answer before continuing.

"I will report on what I have so far, but first I want to ask you a question," Zoe asks, "it is an astonishing coincidence that just as this crucial anti-piracy alliance of independent worlds is in danger of finally succeeding – and Detroit is making a genuine effort to pull its weight – the pirates suddenly become stronger than ever, with intelligence to match? Someone outside is helping them, Captain, someone who would rather see this alliance fail."

Zoe shakes her head, the pieces rapidly forming a disturbing picture, but there still isn't enough to know for certain. "Are they not too highly organized, too well-equipped, to be normal pirates? They have LosTech! This isn't just opportunistic raiding. I think this is an incursion into Detroit by a well-supplied task group with ambitions far beyond that of ordinary pirates. 'Pirates' may just be a cover; they want us to think them pirates." Her gaze narrows. "But these pirates know precisely where to find Lord Kepper Faus, the logistic head for Technicron Engineering, on his one foray out into the countryside. And they strike at him not once, but twice?"

She forms a fist and hits her desk in frustration at herself, "Why did I have to say I was not fit to continue? We could have been there for the second attack." She closes her eyes a moment and shakes her head. What is done is done, I have to focus on the now, she thinks.

Zoe looks directly at Fisher, the core of her new theory forming. "Captain, what exactly is Lord Faus to Detroit's security? His company supplies mechs to the DDF? Does this impact any arrangements you wished to establish? Was not Perun involved in some logistical investigation also? We have never had the opportunity to speak yet."

Lord Faus is also brilliant with mechs, and it might be that they want him for his knowledge.

"That Lord Faus was taken rules out the Free Worlds League. That leaves Laio, or various corporations including our friends at Majesty Metals." Zoe grits her teeth in frustration at the variables, too many, that deny her an answer at this time. "No, there is not enough to go on. Not yet."

She pauses for a breath to let Fisher consider it and she taps her datapad, bringing up a flickering array of schematics and data. "Here is what I know for certain," she continues, her focus shifting entirely to the problem at hand, "I have been looking over the telemetry data and ROMs from the fallen pirate mechs and discovered something: their mechs were stored in an underground staging area."

Her brow furrows, a hint of grim satisfaction mixed with growing concern on her face. "And there is something else. Buried deep in one ROM, I managed to pull a small, fuzzy image: a Majesty Metals crest on the wall in the background."

A chilling thought solidifies in her mind, and she overlays it with an older piece of intel. "Captain, the medical transport 'Bellicose' that took Liang's daughter off-world? It just so happens to be registered to Majesty Metals." The coincidence is too stark for her to ignore.

She looks up, her gaze piercing. "This suggests they may be operating from an abandoned Majesty Metals facility, or even an operational one. I cannot say for certain yet. I am still compiling and cross-referencing the pirate dropship telemetry and logs of intermittent signals. What I can tell you is that their pilot is extremely skilled, and everything points to a very well-equipped and highly organized 'pirate' force." She says the word 'pirate' in a disbelieving tone.

She sighs, thinking deeply on the matter for a few breaths.

She continues, her voice gaining a sharp, investigative edge. "Perun has not yet returned to duty, I request Perun's full report on the smuggling incident he was investigating before joining Sigma Lance. I had hoped to speak with him but it seems events have moved too quickly for that. Specifically, I want to know what exactly was being smuggled out? It may suggests our enemy is occupying an abandoned Majesty Metals facility. If they were working with Majesty Metals, they would have no need to steal DDF supplies, unless there were specific materials Majesty Metals themselves could not provide."

"I also want a complete listing of all Majesty Metals property on this world, current and historical."

"And when I find these people, how do you want to handle it? We have fighters and mechs."

When able, Zoe continues her investigation.

Bluto's jaw hangs open, a low whistle escaping his lips as his eyes greedily take in the gleaming Marauder. When Captain Fisher announces the Marauder 'B' is his, Bluto's grin stretches from ear to ear, and there's a manic gleam in his eyes. He looks ready to smash a table just from sheer excitement.

"An XL, and Improved Gauss Rifle, and ER Large Lasers, and Mediums?" he whispers in a voice thick with awe. He flexes his hands, imagining the sheer power vibrating through his 'Mech. "Oh, man... I think I just had a wargasm!" His gaze is already fixed on the massive 'Mech, his mind instantly leaping to the carnage he'll unleash with it.

Bluto's triumphant grin vanishes the moment Captain Fisher's face darkens. He listens, transfixed, as the bad news rolls in. "Gamma and Lord Faus... disappeared." Bluto's eyes widen. "That's why Carver wasn't answering!" he mutters, the pieces clicking into place. He shakes his head, a frustrated snort escaping him. "What is it with these people? Just going around, kidnapping everyone?"

His gaze drifts from Fisher's grim face to the two gleaming new 'Mechs in the bay, then to the datapad still displaying his half-baked mod ideas for the Thunderbolt and the "Cricket." A heavy sigh escapes him. "Well, we got the 'Mechs," he mutters, a grim edge to his voice, "but sounds like we're gonna need to get our hands dirty when we find 'em."

"So, Captain," Bluto grunts, scratching his chin, "Look I dunno about this kind of stuff but, you know, Zoe's probably right, so if it's Majesty Metals, why don't we just... drop on every single one of their sites and kick in the doors?"

"And if we can't do that," Bluto continues, gesturing vaguely, "then why ain't the DDF just watching every single shuttle, every dropship, anything that flies in or out of Majesty Metals properties? You know, just to see what kind of weird stuff they're hauling around? Can't we just keep an eye on 'em?"
Dr. Zoe Kyaku wrote: Tue Jun 03, 2025 3:34 am "And when I find these people, how do you want to handle it? We have fighters and mechs."
His mind immediately goes to what he knows. "Well," he asks, a flicker of concern in his eyes, "if they're in an underground bunker of some kind we're gonna have to walk in on foot and get them out. Like, commando style." He cuts himself off with a sharp shake of his head. "That stinks, and it's dicey. You send in a few platoons and it gets real messy, or you get a couple good guys and sneak in real quiet. Ah, hell, no one knows where they even are yet, I'll shut up now," he chides himself, already planning without actually knowing anything.

When there's a gap and no one smarter than him (everyone) is saying worthwhile stuff Bluto speaks again.

"Right then," he declares. "Can't help find these clowns. Think I'm gonna order up some decent combat body armor and some assault gear." His thoughts turn to the inevitable. "Dunno what I'll have to do, but if someone is gonna say good ol' Bluto has to sneak into some pirate base and break some necks I'd rather have some gear. Gun fights suck, it ain't like in the holo vids."

And I gotta test drive that sweet sweet Marauder!

James is sitting in the lounge with his sketchbook the morning when Fisher calls in. James having spent the majority of the time just helping the others as needed, not having the technical acumen himself he follows the ideas of the more experienced mech pilots on the team. Every time he passed the Stingray, he'd briefly look into the sky but then go about his task. Between Zoe, Bluto and Santiago, I feel like just another hired hand. Heh, comes with being out of my element. Still, least they don't pressure me as much. James considers silently throughout the projects. Though, James will find time to offer each of his teammates a paint-job on their mech if they'd like. I can at least help with that. James considers.
Fisher wrote: ”First I wanted to extend my congratulations on a job well done with defending Lord Faus. The head of Technicron Engineering has decided to provide Zoe and Bluto with a bonus.”
James tips his glass to Bluto and Zoe when the reward for their efforts is made known by Fisher. "Very cool and deserving." James adds as a compliment to Zoe and Bluto. James then listens to Fisher explain the mechs while sketching them and listening in.
Fisher wrote:”That was the good news, now the bad. Gamma and Lord Faus have disappeared. After they confirmed they were approaching the mine, we lost contact with them. I know it’s been three days, but Faus had a two day period blocked off to inspect the mine. As of now, they are 26 hours past due for a check in and we have not been able to raise them.”
James sets his sketchbook down and looks back at the display with renewed and focused attention. So, maybe that first ambush was a red herring, distract us so security gets lighter and easier to take advantage of. James considers as he glances at Zoe considering her past injuries and Fisher's question to her. James can't help but smile slightly at Zoe's dismissal of her injuries in the wake of Gamma's and Lord Faus's disappearance and nods slightly. Tough one, alright.. James listens to Zoe's analysis and nods in agreement with Bluto's assessment of her idea. "Zoe's assessment is thought out and she's been digging into this for awhile. I concur." James considers then looks to Bluto.

"Some up close and quiet combat would be more efficient than storming the place. I've was apart of an espionage, infiltration team before being a pilot. Quiet, quick. Gunfights get deadly and too much armor slows you down and makes noise. If we have to go in on foot, and I seriously suggest otherwise, it should be done quietly. Perhaps with a decoy attack from another Lance operating in support. They draw the attention away, a few quiet and capable people infiltrate to find and extract Lord Faus and Gamma." James considers out loud.

Santiago glances over the different designs being proposed and even a few that he has drawn up, himself. Before he can get a word in, Captain Fisher comes through on the comms. Santiago grins and nods in approval at the unveiling of the new, pristine mechs.

"Now surely we shall be the bane of all pirates in the sector, no?"

He jams an elbow into Bluto's side playfully. "Maybe now you will have a chance at outshooting me, no, my large friend?"
Santiago's expression darkens at the mention of Gamma Lance's fate. The ones from the bar in Taurus... I may not know them well, but I will not forget the respect they showed me and my house.
She forms a fist and hits her desk in frustration at herself, "Why did I have to say I was not fit to continue? We could have been there for the second attack." She closes her eyes a moment and shakes her head. What is done is done, I have to focus on the now, she thinks.
"Tranquila, Fractal. You could not have known. And killing yourself would not have helped anyone, no?" Santiago scratches at this stubble. He chews a moment on the inside of his cheek.

"Capitan. What mechs does Gamma lance use? If they were defeated, knowing this may give us an idea what we could be up against."
His mind immediately goes to what he knows. "Well," he asks, a flicker of concern in his eyes, "if they're in an underground bunker of some kind we're gonna have to walk in on foot and get them out. He raises an eyebrow at Bluto's suggestion and nods at James. "Perhaps one or two light mechs could provide close support if a raid is required." He smirks at James. "Perhaps even an eye in the sky could be helpful, no?"

He downs the rest of his beer. "Regardless... I am ready for action!"

CPT Fisher nods in acknowledgement of Zoe’s determination. His face remains impassive as Zoe gets her initial questions out for him. He sighs a little as he responds, ”In all honesty we do not know. Your team is the first I have approached regarding this matter. My plan was to send Phoenix and a ground team to investigate the mine.” CPT Fisher shifts his position so he is now primarily in focus and the shiny new mechs become fuzzy outlines in the background, ”I know Phoenix has many talents, but I will be sending a 12 man ground team along with you. They are some of the best ground combat experts we have on staff. You will not be going alone.”

CPT Fisher looks to Santiago to answer his question, ”Gamma used Shadow Hawk’s exclusively.” You can see CPT Fisher give a tight smile, ”No matter how many times I tried to get them into something else they always used the Shadow Hawks. Specifically the 2H model.”

CPT Fisher looks down for a moment before looking back at Bluto to answer his question about Majesty Metals, ”That is a little complicated Bluto. You see Majesty Metals is a massive corporation who rubs shoulders with the largest Houses in the Inner Sphere. We are a planetary defense force. While we could temporarily kick them off world or seize their holding, there would be some very far reaching repercussions to that action. First, Majesty Metals provides about 12% of Detroit’s annual income, in the form of dues, fees, taxes and other things. Second is that they do maintain a larger force then we do…it’s just not here. So they could mobilize more assets against us than we would like, in addition to any support from the Great Houses that may also wish to protect their interests.” CPT Fisher pauses for a moment, ”To your second point, we simply do not have the manpower to check every single flight that leaves the planet. Nor do we have the manpower to enforce such a screening. This planet is vast and we do not have enough people to interdict everything. This is unfortunately still the periphery so there is only so much we can do. The alliance is helping sure, but it also comes with its own share of issues.”

CPT Fisher shifts his focus back to Zoe, ”Well in all honesty no they are not too well equipped for pirates. Most pirates are former mercenaries who have simply found a new way to make money. In fact it’s not at all uncommon for entire mercenary companies to turn to piracy. LosTech is a slight cause for concern, but given the history of some pirates it is not overly surprising. Many of them have finished contracts from some of the Great Houses and the LosTech could be rewarded for a job well done. I mean your team just received two new mechs loaded to the gills with LosTech as a reward, so it is not outside the realm of possibility. Additionally their previous contracts may have pitted them against LosTech and they were able to salvage said equipment.” CPT Fisher smiles, ”This is not to diminish your analytical work or your thought process. However there are more to the pirates than one might expect. Many people still think of the old times from earth. Just some things to think about.”

CPT Fisher’s expression softens, ”Zoe…” He starts but stops as he sees Zoe process her thoughts about her leaving the remainder of the escort to Gamma. ”Seems you have figured it out quickly. I am glad Phoenix has you at its helm.” CPT Fisher nods to Zoe. CPT Fisher pulls out a remote and presses the button. The screen changes slightly as a new banner is visible across the top. "Secure Communication" is now visible in big bold red letters at the top of the screen. Additionally the room you are in suddenly darkens as the windows automatically tint to restrict anyone looking in from the outside. It's the first time any of you have seen this feature used. The device in CPT Fisher’s hand beeps twice and he continues, ”This conversation is highly sensitive and does not leave this forum. Lord Faus is the R&D head of Technicron Engineering. However there are less restrictions on things out in the periphery, so experimental weapons and ideas have an easier time being tested out here. In exchange for equipment we allow Technicron Engineering to conduct weapons tests under the guise of mining operation. Lord Faus comes to check up on their progress when it is required. He also attends demonstrations of new equipment to certify its potential use.” CPT Fisher leans back against the railing near him as he drops that bombshell on your guys but he also holds up a hand to forestall the inevitable question he knows is coming, "For the record I do not know which one he was out here for. The information is kept very close to the chest and is not something I ask about for obvious reasons."

He smiles again at Zoe’s clearly advanced analytics of the situation, ”I will gather all that Perun was working on. For now I can tell you the equipment was generally food stuff, and maintenance equipment. I will try to get you a copy of the reports Perun made. I can get you a complete list of Majesty Metals holdings. It will take me a little time to compile. Hopefully I should have it for you when you arrive at the Technicron Engineering mine. As far as deployment, I leave that to you. I have Angel II standing by whenever you are ready to leave. I hope we can find our people alive and well, but if you can not…” CPT Fisher’s look hardens and his voice drops menacingly, ”Then remind them why you should not mess with the DDF.” CPT Fisher presses the button again and the room and screen returns to normal. ”Good Luck Phoenix.” CPT Fisher salutes them and terminates the call leaving Phoenix to mull over the information and decide on their next move. However they know they are on a clock and every second counts.

What now?

Bluto shakes his head slowly, a low whistle escaping his lips as Fisher explains the sophistication of some pirate operations. "I figured pirates were just smash-and-grabbers," he mutters, "not packing LosTech and pulling off stunts like this." Like Zoe, he hadn't fully grasped the scale of the threat until now. But the repeated targeting of Lord Faus sticks in his mind. "Two hits on Faus, though..." he says, looking around, "that sounds like someone really wanted him. What Fisher said, well, yeah, he sounds important."

He slumps back in his seat, a frustrated sigh escaping him. "Well, I got no idea how to find these clowns," he admits, looking at Santiago and James. He gestures vaguely at the comms screen where the shiny new 'Mechs had just been displayed, then to the datapad with the half-finished designs. "But you fellas gotta make two 'Mechs as dangerous as possible when the time comes." He catches James's eye, and a chuckle rumbles in his chest. "Who knows, maybe we'll even need some air recon, huh, Skywalker?"

He thinks, In the holovids when you need to find someone everyone just turns to the biggest nerd in the room, and they tap at a keyboard for a minute and suddenly know the answer. And the biggest nerd is...

He then looks at their lance leader, and asks directly. "So, how we gonna find these guys? Some weird science trick you know?"

Zoe turns her gaze from Bluto, her expression thoughtful as she looks out of the window.

"Data, Geography and Physics." She replies. "Three angles of attack on this problem. As Fisher says, the planet is vast, but we can narrow down the possibilities."

She counts off each point on her fingers. "One, it is about data. We have limited information from the pirate mechs, but it has given us a clear link to Majesty Metals, a massive corporation as Fisher says. But Fisher says the pirates who Perun was investigating were stealing food stuffs and maintenance equipment from a DDF depot. If these two groups are in fact the same pirate outfit, it suggests they pirates are operating from an abandoned facility. If it was an active Majesty Metals site, they would have their own supply lines. So the data tells us these pirates are maintaining a force somewhere that is off the books, likely a disused or hidden Majesty Metals property."

"I have never had to hunt pirates before, and as Fisher pointed out there is a lot I do not know about them. That they are as well equipped as anyone in the DDF has taken me by surprise. But regardless they still have certain needs other than food and maintenance equipment. They need cover when moving about. That brings us to point two, Geography."

"We need a topographical map of Detroit, and overlay it with lines representing known radar coverage. Every planet, even one as developed as Detroit, has blind spots. Areas where geological formations, atmospheric interference, or simply a lack of infrastructure create 'dead zones' for our long-range sensors. A skilled pilot, like the one flying that pirate DropShip, would know these. They would use them to evade detection on approach and departure."

"My next step," she continues, "would be to cross-reference these known zones of poor radar coverage with the data on abandoned Majesty Metals facilities that Captain Fisher is compiling for us. I am no geologist, but the best sites of mining areas are hopefully few and far between. So we should not have too many sites to narrow down."

She looks meaningfully at James, "If we have multiple sites, a flyover with cameras and sensor suites might be worthwhile for someone looking for some time in the air."

"The third avenue is physics. Unless they are able to blend in with regular traffic, they might be using different jump points than us. If so, they are vulnerable and we can track them down. Think of it this way: our JumpShips, the big ones that take us between star systems, can only jump from very specific points where the gravity is just right. These are called Jump Points." She brings up a holo display of Detroit and its orbital path. "The main ones, the 'highways' we use for normal travel, are usually some distance away, where the star's gravity is pretty uniform. Those are the Zenith and Nadir points. Everyone knows where those are, and the DDF I believe would monitor them closely."

Her expression then turns more serious. "But there are also what people call 'pirate points.' These are not stable. They are temporary pockets where the gravity of the star, Detroit, and even its moons or any big asteroids, all balance out for just a short time. They flicker into existence and vanish. They are incredibly hard to predict, and even harder to jump to accurately without the right data."

She taps her datapad. "I hope that my knowledge of physics, especially in orbital mechanics and gravitational theory, might let me model where these unstable points could appear nearby. We can use the positions and masses of Detroit, its moons, and the sun to calculate where these 'sweet spots' of low gravity might briefly form. This is like predicting where tiny, invisible bubbles will pop up in space as things move around."

"If any exist close to the planet, it cuts down on the DropShip travel time from the Jump Point to Detroit. It lets them appear out of nowhere, bypass our surveillance at the Zenith and Nadir points, hit a target, and then vanish just as quickly."

"So, my 'science tricks'," she concludes, a determined look in her eyes, "is not just about finding their base on Detroit. It is about using physics to anticipate where these pirate Jump Points might exist around Detroit. If they are using them, we can expect their presence and ambush them. If they are using them, we can annihilate not only one base, but their entire network."

"I welcome any assistance," Zoe adds, looking around at the lance. "You do not need to be a physicist; if anyone has skills in investigation, or just a methodical approach to calling around and getting data on radar coverage blind spots, that would be incredibly helpful."

"Otherwise," she continues, turning her attention to the more immediate, practical matters, "as Bluto says, we need your mechs repaired and upgraded before we find our target." She looks directly at Santiago and James. "Finalize your designs. James, if you wish to pilot the Grasshopper, be sure to clear any modifications with Bluto."

James listens to Fisher's explanation thoughtfully, the pilot taking it in step by step as he assimilates the information. His notepad sitting forgotten beside him and the risks and implications. When Fisher compliments Zoe's deductive skills before securing communications, James sits up and listens far more intently. Most of the information goes far over his head, unfortunately. I was never a scientist, closest I ever got to that was as a test pilot. Also glad Zoe is at the helm. James considers internally. Still, multiple hits on Faus lines up with him being some secret R&D head. James ponders, looking to Zoe and Bluto as they respond.

James listens to Zoe's assessment of the situation and best method of approach, finding himself falling in line. Hmm, I wonder if she could help me deal with the General down the line. Reclaim my name, as it were. Her mind may be a match for Harper's. James considers And if she helps, Bluto and Santiago would too. I just need to know more first... But not now, situation at hand. James wipes the thought away, resigning to another mission in the mech.
Bluto wrote: "But you fellas gotta make two 'Mechs as dangerous as possible when the time comes." "Who knows, maybe we'll even need some air recon, huh, Skywalker?"
James smirks and shrugs. "I'm no Mech Master. When the need arises, I'll drive whichever mech you think I should be in for the mission. I'll help you mod it too." James offers with a shake of the head. "And I would definitely love some air time, but not pining for it." James mentions with a shrug, all too familiar with having to do things he didn't like before.
Zoe wrote:"If we have multiple sites, a flyover with cameras and sensor suites might be worthwhile for someone looking for some time in the air."
This catches James attention as his gaze meets Zoe's at the comment and he nods towards Zoe as she affirms Bluto's mention of being in the air. "Just say the word. I wonder if anyone from the support crew is a pilot." James considers. Best to keep her controlling the ground, I can handle the air with a competent wing. James decides internally.

James nods in agreement. "I'll help with your investigation. And I'll let Bluto manage modifications. I'm not a mech guy, as you're no doubt aware. If he trusts me with it, I will pilot it. However, I am competent at investigations, communications and computers and strategy." James offers and will then spend time helping Zoe with her investigations.

Santiago nods along with Zoe's analysis. As she finishes up, he taps on his own datapad a few times, finalizing the modifications to his Thunderbolt.

"I do not believe my input will be terribly useful, comandante. It seems that you have the investigation well under control. My place is in the cockpit, turning our foes into scrap. However..."

Santiago stands, twirls his hand and takes a small bow. "If someone needs to put on a show or... how do you say? Talk smoothly? I like to think I have a flair for the dramatic."

He chuckles softly and sets his datapad on the table. "I have finished the schematics for the Thunderbolt. Thank you all for your suggestions. My design is perhaps less flashy, but I think it will perform well. The availability of lostech was... tempting... to say the least, but I have opted to keep standard technology for the moment as I believe it will make my machine more durable. This way, the Thunderbolt cannot be ignored completely at range and can defend itself until it closes to short range to deliver its payload."

Santiago grins. "I will submit the modifications immediately and I shall be ready when you need me. I am eager to deploy."

As Santiago grins and prepares to submit his modifications, Bluto quietly sips his lager, an evil look on his face. He's been pondering his own 'Mech's potential. He begins to punch in a series of aggressive modifications for his Grasshopper. Probably never get to use it, not with a Marauder to ride now, but James needs lots of options and he likes speed. This will do that, and bring on the big booms.

"It's as if the Hunchback and Grasshopper had a baby, and it is ugly!" he laughs aloud to himself, picturing the formidable design taking shape on his datapad. His vision incorporates XL engines for a significant speed boost and extra tonnage, which he then allocates to mounting a potent Autocannon/20 and an upgraded Large Laser, complemented by a salvo of SRMs.

Bluto shrugs and looks at Zoe. "Might be pricey to do, but I reckon it's worth it. If you prefer, you can keep the Hopper as is, though. Your call, boss."

BIG BOOMS. Say yes Zoe, you know you wanna!

To those present he plays the science card; "A bigger autocannon means a bigger hole and a bigger hole means there's less enemy mech, that's just science!"

Santiago de la Vega wrote: Sat Jun 21, 2025 2:53 amHe chuckles softly and sets his datapad on the table. As my machine is quite over-sinked, I will remove two heat sinks and the flamer in order to add a second SRM6 launcher and keep the PPC. This way, the Thunderbolt cannot be ignored completely at range and can defend itself until it closes to short range to deliver its payload."

Santiago grins. "I will submit the modifications immediately and I shall be ready when you need me. I am eager to deploy."
Zoe nods approvingly as Santiago explains his Thunderbolt modifications. A slight, almost imperceptible smile touches her lips when he mentions avoiding LosTech and prioritizing durability. Prudent, she thinks, her gaze briefly resting on the theoretical schematic on his datapad. Given his aggressive style, an XL engine may well be a liability, inviting catastrophic failure under sustained fire. She appreciates his focus on a balanced approach, maintaining ranged capability while enhancing his close-quarters punch.

"An excellent modification, Santiago," Zoe states, her approval clear in her voice. "Maintaining standard technology will indeed enhance its survivability, a wise choice given the nature of our engagements. The addition of the second SRM-6 will provide a significant boost to your close-range firepower without sacrificing your ranged capabilities. A very well-balanced design."

Bluto wrote: Thu Jun 26, 2025 4:03 pm As Santiago grins and prepares to submit his modifications, Bluto quietly sips his lager, an evil look on his face.

Zoe turns her head slowly towards Bluto, a faint, almost imperceptible arch to one eyebrow. His is a very different approach, but also has merit.

"Bluto," she says, her voice smooth and even. "While I appreciate the… enthusiasm behind your hypothesis, I believe you are perhaps oversimplifying the principles of terminal ballistics and material stress. While a larger caliber certainly correlates with greater kinetic energy transfer upon impact, the reduction of an 'enemy mech' involves a complex interplay of factors including armor type, structural integrity, and the precise point of impact. It's less about a simple 'bigger hole' and more about the efficient application of destructive force to critical systems. And even then, it's more engineering than pure physics at that point."

He's falling asleep...

A tiny, almost invisible smirk plays on her lips for a fleeting moment, and she confirms Bluto's eyes are truly glazing over. Why not let him have his big gun?

"What I mean is, yes, sure," she admits, "a larger autocannon generally tends to be quite effective at 'reducing' an 'enemy mech.'"

She folds her arms and asks a question. "With James in all likelihood taking this mech in support of Santiago, how do you see this design working in tandem with him?"

If Bluto gives a good answer, she nods in agreement. "Very well, make the changes and if we need additional credit we will arrange the sale of a mech frame not in use."

Bluto scratches his chin, a slight squint in his eyes as he listens to Zoe. "I was with you all the way up to 'While I appreciate…'" he admits, a genuine confused expression on his face. Internally, his thoughts were a simpler: Big hole means big damage. Can't be more complicated than that, right?

He gestures vaguely with his beer. "Yeah! Science! This mech is gonna science the hell out of other mechs with that autocannon!"

When Zoe prompts him to justify his design, Bluto’s usual fun-loving exterior narrows into a focused, almost intense explanation. Killing mechs is a topic he understands deeply.

"Alright, so here's the deal, boss," he begins, leaning forward slightly. "Yeah, the upgraded Large Laser gives us more reach than the old one, but that's just gravy. The real kick in the pants for this Grasshopper is the bigger engine and that heavy short-range autocannon."

He pauses for emphasis. "This beast can outrun even a lot of mediums. We close the distance fast, right? Get in their face, then bam! We tear 'em open with that AC/20. That's a huge hole, Zoe! Nothing says fuck off better than an AC/20!"

Bluto chortles evilly, "And once we're in, the SRMs punch right into their guts for critical damage. Santiago's sweet Thunderbolt can chuck even more SRM's into the mix if we're teaming up. Running ain't an option for enemy mechs once we get a bead on 'em; this 'mech is just too damn fast."

Bluto shrugs, a grin playing on his lips. "Sure, the XL engine means you gotta be a bit more careful, watch your sides. But my philosophy? The best defense is a shockingly good offense. Hit 'em hard, hit 'em fast, and don't let 'em breathe."

Shopping:
Bluto makes inquiries into what the best available body armor is for the team, and orders up a set for each member of Phoenix, plus two spares if anyone else were to join in the near future. He favors ballistic protection over laser, if the call needs to be made for one over the other.

Also add: a dozen grenades (p.278 AToW), plus 6 x filter masks (p.296) with a half dozen of tear gas and smoke each.

Bluto doesn't expect to have to use it, being a mechwarrior, but he'd rather not get surprised like Sigma lance did.

Zoe listens to Bluto's reasoning for the Grasshopper modifications, a small, knowing smile playing on her lips. It's not academic, but it's undeniably effective in its brutal simplicity.

"Alright, Bluto," she says, a nod of agreement. "You've got a point. A 'Cricket' that hits like a Hunchback and runs like the wind has definite tactical advantages. We'll go with your 'Cricket' design for the Grasshopper."

As Bluto reacts, Zoe's mind swiftly moves to her next objective: channeling that restless energy. She reaches into a shelf behind her, pulling out a worn, slightly dog-eared book. It's a relic from her technical college days, a quirky gift from an engineering student: a book of logic puzzles, specifically designed to teach concepts of volume and fluid dynamics to a novice. The catch? Every single one is themed around drinking games.

"Here," she says, holding it out to him, a wry look in her eyes. "To keep you occupied while we wait for Fisher's data and for the mechs to be refitted. I want to see how many of these puzzles you can solve before our next mission."

The book is filled with puzzles such as the one below:

Bluto's happy his design was accepted, and deep down he figured someone smarter would come up with something better, which makes him feel surprised also.

What the heck is this? A nerd tech book? Oh man, she's gonna say I gotta pass some kinda exam to build mech designs now? Damn it.

Bluto eyes the book Zoe hands him with suspicion and a frown. It looks like a textbook, and that's a real downer. He wonders if it's worth telling her how much he hated school. He opens slowly is as if there might be a snake inside waiting to bite him, but then his gaze falls on the first puzzle, and a slow, delighted grin spreads across his face.

What the ... what is this?!

The page features a diagram of what Bluto immediately assumes is beer, and it's being poured into a complex system of pipes. These pipes split, twist, and lead to various tanks and overflow mechanisms, eventually terminating in the eager, open mouths of cartoonishly drawn, beer-swilling engineers.

"So I gotta figure out ... which engineer gets to drink first when the beer starts flowing into the main pipe?!"

A loud laugh erupts from Bluto. "This is awesome!" he roars, clutching the book. "Best damn nerd book I've ever seen!" He's already leaning closer, a big stubby finger tracing the paths of the illustrated beer, genuinely interested in the challenge.
