Jake wakes up unsettled. There's been too much change. Forty-eight hours ago he thought he'd found his calling. Now reality is setting in. Even his knowledge of the area as a nearly life-long resident was proving useless. Although he's learned more than the average person about monster lore, he wasn't a great reader, so he doubted he'd be useful in the library. He preferred the more hands-on approach to most situations, which he'd come to realize will probably get him killed.
He looks for anything around the house or the grounds that needs fixing. That was something he could understand.

The night in the manor, Zachary spends his time chasing after small woodland creatures in a vain attempt of gaining some last-minute understanding of hunters and hunting-related activities. That Spring was not far behind was surely a good omen. The attempt having gone as poorly as might be expected, Zachary retires for the night.
In the morning, the detective walks downstairs as he notices Isaiah preparing breakfast. Giving Isaiah a nod, Zachary wanders the halls slowly in an attempt to wake himself up as the others arrive.

Zachary begins to speak. "I too know ho-," he pauses as he recalls the failed attempt from last night and silences himself before he says something silly. "I suppose George was a bit more welcoming that what we've come to expect. I'll try to stop my gums from flapping too much. Anyone bring that journal or whatnot with their names on it? Could show them we're more than a bunch of tourists." Zachary checks for his specs, and considers the possibility of bringing some document or somesuch to indicate their connection to George, the captain, or this whole supernatural situation they've found themselves in. Then again, these two might not even know Whitlach all that well. Wouldn't come across well if some strangers approached pretending to be fast friends or anything. Must be that city slicker approach Jake was talking about.
Zachary joins the group to the Caslow's residence. Assuming the route passes the mysterious highway, Zachary stares out the window in the unlikely event more cars are parked along the highway's side. As the group drives along, Zachary speaks up. "Y'know, we hadn't really considered the possibility that the brothers are off hunting while Ezekiel is running the store. Wouldn't mind exploring the town and all if we need to wait, but do we know all that much about this fella who runs the store?"

Nigel rises from an almost-but-not-quite-restful sleep (it's so hard to get a good night's sleep your first night in a new bed, after all) and starts his daily routine of getting ready for the day ahead. And thus starts another day without you, Elsie and Sarah. I love you and miss you. If you're looking down from on high, I'd appreciate some good vibrations that'll result in a few leads, please.
He makes his way down to the kitchen where Isaiah is making breakfast (or at least making a valiant effort in that direction). "Good morning, gentlemen," he says to anyone who's already there. "Looking forward to some fruitful investigations today?"

In the meantime, stick to your standard learning technique of keeping your eyes open and your mouth shut.

The group collects into the battered but serviceable town car left by the late Captain Whitlach, and make for Bellwood, the whole trip is a little over an hour with how the roads weave among the ridges and valleys of the mountains. The conversation continues in the car.

Eventually the group makes it into Bellwood, a relatively new town by local standards, built on the location of a former plantation. It has one main road, which makes finding Ezekiel's Hunting store relatively easy, as it’s near the end of the row. A few vehicles are parked on the street near the building, but nothing particularly interesting. The building is a two story affair, with what is likely an apartment or two above a storefront. The front of the building is plastered with a variety of adverts for goods and sundries, with the name Ezekial painted in white on a large sign above the door. While the store does seem open, it’s dark from the outside, so the group doesn’t get a good look inside before entering the building.
Inside is a clutter of shelves and cases displaying a lot of goods that would be useful to those who make their living outdoors. From the front door, the group can only guess that the counter is in the back of the store and is not seen easily from the front.

Jake looks around curiously, almost growing concerned until he finally spots a local on the street, then another. His initial paranoia fades as the town appears well within the ordinary. Some days he felt like he was still sleeping in a trench.

As he gets out of the car, Jake slings his rifle and his backpack, the latter of which is well maintained and packed with military precision for weight distribution and to make the contents as accessible as possible.
He nods politely to any locals who might be giving the strangers a side-eye.
Inside, he gives the shop keep a beat or two to appear. When no one does, he clears his throat and peers through the door on the far wall. "Hello? Y'all open?"
Even though nothing appears off beyond the lights being out, he opens his third eye in case of trouble.

(Assuming Isaiah is driving)
For the most part, Isaiah listens but doesn't talk as the others continue the conversation in the car. A good deal of it is speculation and they needed more to go on. Hopefully Ezekiel and the Caslow Brothers is the step in the right direction. We certainly weren't accomplishing much being a city removed from the events, and I can't just leave a mystery like this unsolved. Isaiah considers, his upper lip twitching in annoyance. It bothers me when things like this go unresolved and people keep getting hurt. Isaiah finishes the thought as they pull up towards the Hunter's shop.
"And here we are." Isaiah says, noting the address he was given and the number on the building to make sure they matched. He puts the car in park and pops the break before getting out and follows Jake and the others in.
Jake wrote:"Hello? Y'all open?"
Isaiah looks around the quiet and cluttered shop and his OCD flares up. Fight it. This isn't your shop, not your place to organize it. Isaiah thinks, shaking his head. "Quiet for early morning, but then I don't know what peak deer hunting hours are." Isaiah comments and then walks towards the back of the store, looking for what might be considered the counter. Maybe there is a bell. He thinks, partly is sarcasm, partly seriously. If there is, he will tap it to ring the bell.
Should they be met by someone, Isaiah nods. "Mornin'." Isaiah greets whoever may meet them. "We're looking for a map of the forest." Isaiah begins, trying to start the conversation with something other than we're looking for someone.

As Zachary steps out of the car, his first thoughts compare the town of Bellwood to the slightly larger town of Glen Jean. Not like I was expecting much in size, but this seems barely larger than Prosperity. Guess that means at least we won't be running in circles to find wherever we need to go. At this point somewhat used to the odd stares of the locals, Zachary tries to ignore them as the group enter the building.

Now it's Nigel's turn to chuckle. "I suppose it all depends on how one defines 'their right mind,' Mister Foster... As for myself, I'm often reminded of a colleague of mine who believes that when you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." He pauses a moment. "And since you're more familiar with the locals than I am, I'm more than happy to let you take the lead today."
Once the group arrives in Bellwood Nigel is true to his word, hanging back and letting the younger men precede him under the pretense of looking around and taking in the sights of their locale (which is not entirely inaccurate; he is bringing his powers of observation to bear and trying to learn as much as he can from initial observations). If he finds folks staring at him, he'll give them a warm smile and a friendly nod.

"No idea," Nigel mutters under his breath, to himself more than anyone else in particular. "I'm a doctor, not an outdoorsman."It is odd though, an open store still being in the dark at this hour... he thinks to himself as he continues to scan his surroundings -- especially back out the doorway they just stepped through -- and instinctively reaches into his pocket towards his gun. His danger sense hasn't triggered, and he hasn't sensed any paranormal vibrations of a malevolent nature so far, but it's always good to have a contingency. Just in case.

Bellwood seems pleasant enough, no one seems to pay the quartet of investigators any mind, not even a wary glance. Upon entering the gloom of Ezikial’s Sporting goods, Jake speaks up.
Jake wrote:"Hello? Y'all open?"
From the back, a wizened voice calls back. ”Yessir, welcome, feel free to look around.” Says an older man.
Jake then proceeds to enter something of a trance as he opens his “Third Eye” and generally becomes oblivious to the other around him.
Isaiah, Zachary, and Nigel, make their way towards the back end of the store, and once around a few ill placed shelves, they can see an old man in worn flannel leaning against a glass case that seems to act as a counter. ”Welcome, what can I do for you.” He asks.
Isaiah wrote:"Mornin'... We're looking for a map of the forest."
The man nods. ”A little more detail. Lot’s of forest across Appalachia. You mean the local area, or somewhere else?” The old man asks.
To the others they can finally sus out why the light is so dim in the store… most of them are blocked by merchandise or other things, basically starving the location of light, but other than that the place seems pretty normal and the old man appears relatively harmless.
While in his trance Jake doesn’t sense anything in range, it all seems very mundane.

"Yes, we're also looking for the Caslow brothers if you might be able to point us in their direction." Isaiah reaffirms without touching on the nature piece fib. Just hope this shopkeep doesn't ask too many questions. Isaiah ponders.

Zachary raises an eyebrow at Jake's words. Ah, so this was your plan was it? Well played. the detective thinks to himself as he rubs his chin. The thought occurs to Zachary to respond with some kind of prior knowledge of the forest, perhaps to add credibility to the front. Unfortunately, such information evades him. Though if this Ezekiel fella starts volunteering himself for an interview, that could spell us some trouble. Hoping to keep things to the point, Zachary replies "A guide like that would be awful helpful. I was warned by an acquaintance that the forest can be awful thick around these parts." It wasn't a lie, as Zachary can recall George mentioning how easy it could be to be lost in the woods. Though a part of him hopes at the same time the statement is not incorrect.

Nigel chuckles softly to himself. That's not a bad cover story, Mister Foster. You've got a competent mind underneath that scruffy exterior.
He nods in agreement. "Strictly speaking, though, I'm mainly here for the anthropological aspect. There aren't too many large areas of wilderness left in England, so there's a surprising amount of interest in the whole 'man versus nature' storyline back home y'know. I'm very interested in hearing the Caslows' perspectives in that regard."
He shrugs and flashes a rather sheepish grin, leaning into the 'good-natured professor rather out of his element' persona... which, to be fair, isn't much of an exaggeration at the moment.

Ezekiel listens to the investigators spin their yarn, and if he’s caught them in a lie or not, doesn’t seem to matter too much when he answers. ”As long as you’re not the feds, I think the Caslow’s will talk to you. They’re probably sleeping off a bender of too much shine at the moment. So I’d come back in a few hours, when they’ll likely have stumbled in. As for a map of the area around here, I have one, but it’s from an old survey, so it’s likely not very accurate, I can sell it to you for a buck fifty.” Ezekiel says fixing his glasses.
If the group buys the map, Ezekiel Steps away from the counter to allow the group room to open the map to look at it. He was true to his word, it appears that the Map is from a 1798 survey of the area, and is missing much of the roads or towns in the area, and the details of the topography is light to say the least. One skilled in map reading and bushcraft likely could use the map to find some of the more major points of interest in the area, but given the issue the group is dealing with, it might as well be blank.
If the group decides to wait for the Caslow Brothers, Ezekiel mentions a restaurant down the block, that they could likely waste a few hours at. Jake seems irritated that the situation still does not have an easy answer, grumbles something to himself as he steps outside, leaving the Isaiah, Zachary, and Nigel alone with Ezikiel.

Zachary takes the map, and looks over it carefully. In particular, Zachary is interested in more non-residential sites (ex. Mines, inns, the restaurant Ezekiel mentioned) A 1798 survey? Further back than I would have liked, but you'd would wonder how much the town has changed since then. Zachary reaches into his coat pocket to see if he has some change remaining. If so, he will pay for the map. Having made the exchange, Zachary addresses the rest of the group in a low voice to avoid being overheard. Gesturing to Isaiah, Zachary continues "Not exactly a local history book, but I'll bet a picture is as good on paper as words."
Assuming the rest of the group leaves, Zachary says "Well fellas, it seems we've got time to kill. I'm gonna stretch my legs and have a look around the place. Anyone want to join?" Assuming there is no object, Zachary begins to wander Bellwood. If time permits, he will try to make a note of which of the aforementioned sites remained and which sites have not.

As they relocate to the restaurant, Nigel tries to bring his powers of observation to the town and the clientele at the establishment while distracting himself from the frustration at not finding much in the way of clues to either of the group's investigations thus far. "So many dead ends..." he mutters under his breath. Well, what did you expect? Mysteries that are easy to solve aren't exactly mysteries, now are they? He muses to himself. The truth is out there, so they say. It's all just a question of where to look for it... what questions to ask, and what people to ask the right questions. Nothing for it at the moment but to keep pressing on and hoping opportunities prevent themselves.
Once they're seated and coffee/tea has been ordered, he glances over at Zachary and Isaiah. "So, then... either of you able to make anything of this map?"

With the general meeting with Ezekiel over, the investigators move on to wait for the Caslow’s. Zachary takes some time to look at the town, which is not particularly huge, but is comparable more to Glen Jean, than the absolutely tiny Prosperity they currently live in. It has all the general features of most towns, restaurants, a hotel, stores selling a variety of goods, a post office, and at least on B&L company store. As for mines and other things like that, they’re outside of town, likely more than a few miles away. How all this corresponds with the map purchased by the group, it doesn’t, on the map the only reference to Bellwood is a farm, and Route 20 doesn’t exist except as a trail, that isn’t particularly well documented. The map does try to show the general topography of the area, but it’s clear it’s not super accurate.
One of the first surveys of the area known as West Virginia was done by none other than First President George Washington when he was a mere 16 years old. Also the town of Bellwood is likely only about a decade old, I found it hard to find actual historical information, as there happens to be a town of the same name in Virginia as well.
The group spends its time going over the map and talking, when around two in the afternoon, Ezekiel enters the restaurant briefly, makes eye contact with the group and waves them on to follow him. A short walk back to his store finds a beat up looking truck parked in front of the shop, it has a peculiar odor about it that is hard to place. But being a generally unimportant detail, the group enters the hunting store to find two heavy set fellows standing near the counter, smoking cigarettes and laughing. ”Gentelman, I introduce to you the Caslow Brothers.” Ezekiel says as he gestures to them. They are rough looking men, who appear to be more at home outside than in towns. One has brown hair cut into a mohawk, while the other has blonde hair in what modern folk call an undercut. Both of them look to the investigators. ”Morning… What can we do for you?”

En Route
Zachary wanders the town, taking in the sights. Though the map turned out to be of little help, he does take note of the size of the town. Looks like Prosperity might be an odd one out in these parts. Might not help with the investigation, at least not yet. Though it is good to know what to expect. Zachary again notices the B&L location in town. Though not a surprise, the slight feeling of suspicion yet lingers.
Having finished surveying the town, Zachary joins up with the others before encountering the Caslows.
The Caslows
Zachary looks at the brothers. the rugged appearance certainly matches the impression Zachary had of them in his head, though the mohawk catches the detective by surprise. Hoping not to cause too much of a scene, Zachary looks to the others, particularly Jake, to see if they make an introduction first. If none is made, Zachary will give the pair a greeting nod. "Fellas. Hope we didn't disturb your rounds in the forest. Good hunting this morning?"
Waiting for a response (or lack thereof), the detective thinks to himself. Guess we can keep up that cover story of ours. Maybe if they do know a thing or two we could be more clear but... Clearing his throat, Zachary continues "I take it Ezekiel might have mentioned it, but we've been meaning to trek around the forest for a nature piece." Unsure if he's digging the hole deeper than the rest of the group would like, Zachary looks to the rest of the group to see if they jump in.
A thought then hits Zachary, something he hadn't considered. Wait. We don't really have anything to offer in exchange, do we? Maybe I shouldn't have let all of that slip. Let's see what they have to say first. Zachary listens to the brothers' reply intently.

While Isaiah waits, he studies the map that was acquired with a furrowed brow and scowl as he determins that the map is basically worthless. The route is new enough that prospectors haven't even properly marked and mapped it yet. This map may well be blank. I wonder if I can at least notate where we are, where Prosperity is, some of the other natural land marks. Could be useful for dead reckoning, at least. Isaiah considers and is arguably lost studying the map most of the time. In such a way he doesn't even notice Nigel or Zachary leave and ends up sitting in the car studying the map while the duo explore and find a coffee. When he finally looks up and notices Jake has vanished as well, he rolls his eyes. Jake comes and goes like a dog with an open door. Isaiah shakes his head.
Nigel wrote:"So, then... either of you able to make anything of this map?"
When he meets back up with Nigel and Zachary, Isaiah shakes his head. "May as well be blank. The route isn't listed, I've been trying to add where we are, where Prosperity is. The rough route we took between Bellwood and Propserity to get a sense of the route and any key points on the map." Isaiah admits but doesn't explain further as the Caslows finally arrive.
Zachary wrote:"I take it Ezekiel might have mentioned it, but we've been meaning to trek around the forest for a nature piece."
Isaiah fights a frown at the continued and unnecessary lie but doesn't detract and instead decides to shift it. "We're looking for some guides through the forest as we research it. The specific piece we're working on has to do with the disappearances that take place in the forest near the route. We've heard you know the forest well. What would it cost to hire you to show us around and tell us what you might know of the land as experienced hunters in the area?" Isaiah asks, the lie turned into a half-truth considering they are truly researching the area. Isaiah waits holding his notebook as if ready to take notes based on what they say. The map tucked into the back of his notebook.
If they ask how they heard of the Caslows, Isaiah shakes his head. "Not good practice to reveal our sources, but we came from Prosperity." Isaiah will offer.

It does have the inkling of route 20 as it originally was a trail of some sort.
Also Bellwood is on the map as it was a farm in the 1600’s
Prosperity is not on the map as it was founded 1844, as the map was made 46 years before that.
It is a very well done topographical map, one just needs to know how to read it.
Zachary looks towards where he thought Jake may be, but finds that it is just he, Isaiah, and Nigel.
Zachary wrote:"Fellas. Hope we didn't disturb your rounds in the forest. Good hunting this morning?"
The duo laugh. ”If sleeping a hangover off is hunting, sure. Ezikial where did you get these guys? Phil says, before going back to his cigarette.
Zachary wrote:"I take it Ezekiel might have mentioned it, but we've been meaning to trek around the forest for a nature piece."
The brothers shake their heads. ”Nah, he just said some folks wanted to meet us.” Micah says, looking towards Phil.

The brothers give each other a look, it’s certainly weighted, and definitely means something, what that is, is unknown to the investigators. ”So you’re chasing a ghost story for a nature piece… Who you really working for?” Phil says.
Isaiah wrote:"Not good practice to reveal our sources, but we came from Prosperity."
The two brothers start cracking up. ”Lemme guess, Captain Whitlach sent you. Isaiah considers mentally as he nods, deciding to come clean to the Hunters entirely. "You're quick. That's good. Also not in the habit of just openly asking about ghost stories." Isaiah confirms, knowing nothing about Nigel or Zachary's connections.

Zachary chuckles nervously as it becomes apparent that the Caslow brothers saw through their ruse so easily. We never really sell it on these cover stories, do we? Zachary's memory goes back to a similar attempt to get into the B&L mine back in Glen Jean, though his attention snaps back to the conversation at the mention of Captain Whitlach and Carl.

Zachary listens as Isaiah explains the situation. Hoping not to give too much away, Zachary tries to add to the discussion. "Sounds like you and the ol' Captain have a history." Though meant in jest, Zachary pays attention to their reaction. Should we bring up George too? Well, with a reaction like that we wouldn't want to open any old feuds if there were any. "We'd probably need to check out the forest for ourselves to get some idea of what we're looking at here. Not a trace or nothing on the road." Though the idea occurs to the detective to ask for landmarks around the forest, or follow up on Isaiah's curiosity in the town's folklore, but Zachary shelves the thought until it's more clearly established the brothers are willing to assist. Nigel chuckles as the brothers quickly obliterate the pretense of their cover story. Well they’re certainly not idiots, he thinks to himself. That’s a positive. On the other hand, if they’re intelligent enough to see through that, they might be intelligent enough to have been responsible for at least some of the more recent disappearances. That’s a potential negative.

As soon as the investigators confirm their actual alliances, the Caslows laugh. ”Ezikiel, we’re gonna go and use the shop to talk in private.” Micah says, before ushering the investigators towards the back. The group winds up in a room that is obviously used to do both taxidermy, with several projects in the process of being made, and likely also used to do a bit of lightweight gunsmithing. Zachary perks up at the mention of a ghost story. At once, several thoughts come to mind of potential haunts roaming about the performance, driving or perhaps inhabiting the cars. This train of thought is interrupted however, when mention of the Hungry Winter comes up.
OOC Comments
As usual, the ghost fixation is an in-character moment and not to be taken seriously.
Zachary rubs his chin as he thinks for a moment of the story the Caslow brothers brought up. "A grisly winter from that long ago? That certainly does sound like the kind of story that would get passed around. I imagine there's more detail to it than that however. Was it really everyone who participated in this... less savory way of survival? All in the town's borders, not outside?" Zachary listens to the brothers for their reply. "Well ghost story or otherwise, I'd be curious to know more about what the forest is like. Can't imagine there are a lot of other folks hunting around there, are there? "

Nigel is writing down notes when the brothers bring up the 'hungry winter.' "Cannibalism? Well, that could definitely account for at least some of the disappearances..." he nods. "Can you recall where or from whom you first heard about this 'hungry winter?' Any idea where or when they in turn first heard of it?"
If this is a case of human predation, then there may be hunting patterns of some sort. Animals don't change their habits, whereas humans do. He glances back through his notes of the disappearances to see if there's any kind of common theme (aside from the general area) -- a prevalent time of year, a regular interval between them, a commonality among the victims, and so forth. He also starts thinking back over his own research into creatures that are known to prey on humans. If a monster is the culprit, are we talking about a multi-generational population in the area? Or maybe a single creature or small group of exceptionally long-lived individuals? None of the options sound particularly pleasant, of course.
For a moment he also considers bringing up the murders of the Order members he was originally sent out here to investigate but thinks better of it. Best to wait until Carl can give me some information to go on, he muses. Hard to ask them about events you know nothing about yourself.

Not that Nigel really expects some sort of monster to be responsible for all the disappearances -- at least, not a 'monster' in the classical sense -- but it's at the very least a jumping off point worth considering. And if it's a person or group of people that's causing the disappearances, I'd still classify them as 'monsters' as they'd totally fit the part.

Empathy is a psi-ability that makes the psychic aware of, or feel, the emotions of other people, animals, and supernatural creatures. The strongest emotions are easiest to sense: hate, anger, terror, love. Feeling for emotions can often be used to establish that somebody or something is nearby, but can not be used to pinpoint an invisible or hiding person or creature. Empathy can be especially helpful in recognizing and communicating with ghosts and other supernatural creatures.
Questioning a person/being while using Empathy can be very handy in establishing how they are reacting to you. In a limited sense, Empathy can be sued like a lie detector to see if the emotions match the verbal response. [Example: 'Did you know the deceased?' The verbal answer is no, but there is a sudden flare of nervousness and fear (or hate). This does not mean the guy is the killer, but it might mean he is lying about knowing the dead man. Further questions might pull out a strong emotion such as anger or hate (or happiness), which may confirm the psychic's suspicions that this man might be involved in the murder. However, remember that this is, at best, circumstantial evidence and definitely inadmissible in court. Physical proof must be found, but the empathic readings may put characters o the correct track. Also, remember that the empathic psychic is feeling the person's real emotions, but interpreting their significance. A very nervous person may always radiate fear or anxiety, while a cold-bloodied,pathological killer may feel nothing at all and stay calm and cool as they lie through their teeth. The feeling of hate may mean that the person did know the murder victim, or knew of him, and hated them for any number of reasons. That does not mean he killed them. As you can see, interpreting emotions can be a tricky thing.
Haunting ghosts and entities rarely mask their emotions. Thus, the psychic can easily tell if one or more are nearby (within the range) and what it is feeling. 'I sense great sorrow.' or 'Do as it says! It is angry, almost crazed. I think it will carry out its threat if you try to stop it.'
Range 100 feet (30.5m) area.
Duration: 2 minutes (8 melees) per level of experience
Length Of Trance: 0
I.S.P.: 4
Saving Throw: Standard' a Save vs Empathy means the psychic can not get a clear sense of the emotions of that particular person. To save, the person must roll once each melee that the psychic is using empathy. Mind Block will prevent any empathic emanations from the blocked person.

Post:
Isaiah takes a can of Bubble Up if they have it and takes a seat to listen to the Caslow's. While the Caslow's offer their tellings of the local area and what they've been up too, Isaiah focuses his mind and opens himself up to the Supernatural. Isaiah will do his best to not lapse into a trance-like state and maintain an interest in the conversation as Nigel and Zachary take the lead. Isaiah then empathetically reads the Caslow's as they talk, trying to determine how they are answering and if they are lying.
Should Isaiah not detect that they are lying, and no one questions his brief blink out while Opening himself up to the Supernatural, he will nod in appreciation at their retelling. His mind focused on the idea of cannibalism and makes his brow furrow as he considers what it could be. I've heard of monsters that eat humans, what was it's name... Wen- something, I think. Or I guess it could also be human based. Cannibalism is a unique word to use to describe it. Implies human on human slaughtering. Would also explain why the vehicles vanish. Isaiah considers to himself. "Do either of you know of anyone else who lives in the forest, or any abandoned mines or caves in the area?" Isaiah asks the Caslows piggy-backing off of Zachary and Nigel's questions.
Contingency: If Isaiah senses that they are lying, Isaiah furrows his brow unsure of how much danger they could be in with two hunters who are lying to them. Still Open to the Supernatural and using Empathy, Isaiah decides to ask a couple other, more direct questions. "You said you've been fishing, lately? Lakes or streams, got a favorite lake?" Isaiah asks of the Hunters, more pointedly, trying to see if he can sense additional lies. Come to think of it, a lake would be a great place to toss vehicles no one wanted found. Isaiah considers.

Nigel:Research (reviewing case notes for commonalities/patterns consistent with predation): Not a particular set, unless you run on the vague idea that most happen between fall and Spring, and very few during the summer. Lore: Demons & Monsters (trying to think of creatures that like to prey on humans): At the moment, Nigel can’t narrow it down from well all of them most likely. Isaiah:Lore, Superstitions [Does Isaiah recognize the story the Caslows tell, or does he know of a similar story; possibly about the the myth behind a Wendigo, the hunter turned cannibal turned monster] The myth does coincide with several incidences from the past. A little know fact about the Jamestown colony, was that there may have been such depredations as cannibalism in their early life, and it certainly matches with what people say may have happened at Roanoke island, while they are a bit distant from the current location, they do lend some credence to the idea that a bad winter could turn people to cannibalism, As for Wendigo being factored into these tales, a bit more research with some sources may add to this. (A specific point to look up in the Whitlach Collection) Lore, Demons and Monsters: [Does Isaiah know anything about Wendigos (considering it a Monster unless told otherwise)]: Powerful spirits made manifest in the world that seem to delight in the suffering of people, specifically while under the strain of starvation. Here is where the legends differ, some say they are a creature in their own right, while others say they’re more like a possessing spirit taking over those who consume the flesh of their fellow man. If either are true, it’s still a frightening prospect.

Micah and Phil both shrug. ”Don’t know, Like I said, I’m not even sure if the tale is real. As for Bellwood, she hasn’t been a town for more than twenty years at best, so no idea.” Micah says.
Zachary wrote:"Well ghost story or otherwise, I'd be curious to know more about what the forest is like. Can't imagine there are a lot of other folks hunting around there, are there? "
”There are a fair bit of folks who hunt these areas. Full of deer and other game, so It’s a cheap way of filling our larders for the winter.” Phil says.
Nigel wrote:"Cannibalism? Well, that could definitely account for at least some of the disappearances... Can you recall where or from whom you first heard about this 'hungry winter?' Any idea where or when they in turn first heard of it?"
Micah shakes his head. ”Couldn’t rightly say, likely heard if from Mamaw or Pawpa, when I was a little’n. As for where they heard it, no clue, like I said it’s an old story.” Micah says.
Nigel wrote:"And to piggyback on that, in your explorations, have you come across any indications of... shall we say, 'unusual' wildlife in the area? Or rather, anything you couldn't identify as something you'd normally see around here?"
Both shake their heads. ”Nothing that can’t be easily explained.” Phil says. Isaiah’s request for a Bubble up gets Phil digging in the ice chest, before handing the investigator a cold bottle. ”There you go.”
Isaiah wrote:"Do either of you know of anyone else who lives in the forest, or any abandoned mines or caves in the area?"
”There are probably a dozen or so families who are holed up in various hollers and cuts. Some are just there because that’s where home is, others are avoiding people. Plenty of caves and a few old mines in the hills, usually have bears or wild cats living in them.” Micah responds.
Isaiah subtle use of empathy doesn’t reveal anything like a lie, they do both seem to be taking the group seriously, and may have a slight edge of fear at the idea of something roaming their woods.

Zachary listened intently. Cannibalism? It does seem like we're focusing on the why again. Same thing that had us running in circles back in Glen Jean. Still, this does give us at least some clue. Though he would have wanted to share this information with Nigel and Isaiah, it didn't seem a good idea to spook the Caslows too much. Maybe the captain's study has a thing or two on the subject as well.
"I take it if you're acquainted with Carl, he probably also knows about this Hungry Winter too, doesn't he?" Zachary asks the brothers. Zachary was in no rush to return to Prosperity, but perhaps that could be another branch if this one lead to a dead end. "Well, let's say we were to wander this forest. Are you aware of any trails? Though we did come in with that whole cover story and all, we did have some intent into looking into the forest."

Nigel frowns as he scribbles down notes. Dead end after dead end. Literally. But the process of elimination implies that eventually we'll get somewhere by ruling out enough of what it isn't. Patience, Nigel. Patience.
"Well... the disappearances do largely seem to have taken place between the fall and the spring..." he mutters as he writes. "So for better or worse, that could be construed as somewhat supporting the 'Hungry Winter' story from your grandparents." He shrugs. "At least in theory, anyway. Far from enough evidence for a solid hypothesis, but enough to ponder going forward."
He thinks for a moment. "No unusual wildlife... Hmm... I wonder... Enh, never mind that. Let's talk a moment about the town itself. You say Bellwood's been a town for 20 years at most now, yes? I'm sure the town didn't just spring up overnight like mushrooms after a heavy rain. What was it like before the town was founded, do you know? What kind of place was it? Anything unusual about it?"
"And if I may, can we circle back to the Captain? You said you helped him find a missing boy once. What do you remember about that? Anything unusual or noteworthy about the child or the circumstances of his disappearance? And what can you tell us about the Captain himself, beyond his being a 'kook,' of course..." Nigel chuckles. "The late Captain and I had some mutual acquaintances, and while I never met him myself his untimely death did raise some concerns. They asked that I try to find out more about what happened before I officially start my new position... but not knowing much about him has made that a bit of a challenge."

Isaiah listens to the Caslow's recounting and nods slowly to himself as his empathic extension doesn't sense untruthfulness from the Brothers. Isaiah closes himself back off and continues listening as he jots down what he can piece together from their story and what he can remember. This sounds similar to the Roanoke Story, albeit displaced several hundred miles. I recall there being some rumors that the Jamestown Colony was subjected too depraved acts such as cannibalism in it's early life. As for Wendigos, I remember reading them, though nothing concrete. Perhaps the Whitlach Estate has more information on them now that I have a better idea what to look for. Possibly a creature in it's own right, or a possessing spirit turning a man into a monster. Neither are good. Isaiah considers internally, jotting down what he can to not need to remember it verbatim later.
Micah wrote:”There are probably a dozen or so families who are holed up in various hollers and cuts. Some are just there because that’s where home is, others are avoiding people. Plenty of caves and a few old mines in the hills, usually have bears or wild cats living in them.”

Isaiah nods. Well, anything occupied by wildlife would like not have a supernatural roommate and I doubt those random families want folk like us to just drop in. Isaiah considers. "Or any of those mines or caves considered no-go's among hunters? Other areas you steer clear of due to rumor, myth or otherwise?" Isaiah asks.

This question gets a shrug. ”There are plenty of trails, Some real safe, some not so much.” Micah responds. ”I think you may want to narrow your search down before ya’ll start just wandering, there is more forest here than people, so you’d be wandering a long time I think.” Micah concludes, taking a drag of his cigarette.

If there is any back and forth it’s usually along the lines of telling someone not to mess with their spot.” Micah responds.
”It sounds like you boys have some of that thinking to do, so why don’t you come back if you need us. Just leave a message with Ezikial when you do.” Phil says. It’s pretty obvious from the brother’s stances that while they’re willing to help, they’re not particularly interested in the hypothesis/research aspect of investigations.

Isaiah mentally notes the reason that Nigel is here; investigating the Captain's untimely death. I wonder who it is that Nigel and the old Captain were associated too. They are protective of it I can see. Isaiah considers, however he gives the current mystery is attention and files that question for later.
Phil wrote:”It sounds like you boys have some of that thinking to do, so why don’t you come back if you need us. Just leave a message with Ezikial when you do.”
Isaiah takes in the information and nods to Phil. "Thank you for humoring us. We'd like to ask you two to be our guides when we head into the forest, but like you said, we have some thinking to do and answers to find first." Isaiah says, genuinely appreciative of Phil and Micah for their willingness to answer what must be odd questions, and a willingness to help in the future. Many would've simply told us to kick rocks. These two might be good backup. Isaiah considers as he steps outside with Nigel and Zachary.

When they are ready to head back, Isaiah will jump in the Captain's car and drive them back to the estate. The first thing Isaiah does is make a fresh pot of green tea and then heads to the Library to begin researching some of the new leads. If Nigel or Zachary offer to help, Isaiah will share his focus points and ask for them to look for anything related to Wendigos, Jamestown Colony, Roanoke Story or the land around Bellwood before the town was formed. If they have their own focuses, Isaiah will keep an eye out for that as well.

Zachary nods in acknowledgement. "Thanks for the time. Phil and Micah, was it? We'll give a holler if we need you." The thought occurs to inquire as to which hunters might be covering which plots of the land, although without knowing much of the forest themselves, Zachary puts those thoughts aside.
On the car ride back to Prosperity, Zachary glances out the window with a slight look of boredom. Hoping to break up the drive, Zachary gives Nigel a quick nudge. "You uh, mentioned something about having mutual acquaintances with the Captain, right?" begins the detective,"I take it Carl is among them? Anyone else in particular who might be in town?"
At the Captain's place, Zachary notices Isaiah pouring through the captain's library. Hoping to uncover more information himself, Zachary spends time searching for records of notable famines in the town's history. (Research 1) Would it be unreasonable to look for records of the victims from the Hungry Winter? We don't know what that thing is roaming around the highway, but if it's related to one of the victims, maybe that can narrow down the kind of beast we're dealing with. Thinking back to the Caslows' mention of forest trails, Zachary also searches for information pertaining to specific trails around Bellwood's vicinity, on the off-chance there is some information to round down (Research 2).

Isaiah:Research [Look for any documentation/books about Wendigo's] Isaiah finds a few treaties on the subject, which generally confirms his previous knowledge of the creature. One variety is some manner of beast, tall and powerful with a deer-like head, known for eating victims it finds. The writing particularly notes that killing a Wendigo in this form is near impossible, they can only really be sealed away by ancient magics. The second variety of Wendigo is more akin to a possessing spirit, causing the possessed individual to crave the flesh of their fellow man in exchange for long life and unholy power. They too are hard to kill, but once dead they tend to stay dead unless the spirit can find another willing host nearby. Research [Look for information about Roanoke Story] One of the first colonization attempts that failed. When the company returned they found no one left and the village destroyed. It’s theorized that they may have resorted to cannibalism. Research [Look for information about the Jamestown Colony] The first successful colonization attempt by the English. Through trials and tribulations they somehow managed to scratch out a living, eventually creating the United States of America, but it is rumored that in its infancy when food became scarce, they too may have resorted to cannibalism. Research [Dig into the information of the land around Bellwood before the town was formed; was there a tribe or some other group that lived there; was there myths surrounding the forest even then?] According to the books, the area was largely populated by Cherokee, Shawnee, and Ohio River Valley Tribes. But Isaiah is unable to unearth any particular legends about the area at the moment. Zachary:Research (Research for accounts or records of the Hungry Winter, if available): Based on what he can piece together, the Hungry Winter likely coincides with the year 1844 or 43, All accounts note how poor the harvest was, and the lack of game animals in the area due to other ecological reasons. While none of the accounts Zachary finds note cannibalism specifically, it does note that a lot of folks died or went missing in the general area. Research (Research on forest trails in Bellwood, if available) While trails are noted in many of the writings, no accurate maps seem to be available. Nigel:Research (looking for anything about local history/folklore): The area that would eventually become West Virginia is steeped with folklore, to try and list here would be folly. It seems since mankind first found this place it has been an area of wondrous beauty and magic, with equal parts dark and dangerous as there seems to be some manner of hidden war from the shadows. Nigel is well aware that the latter is true as it’s the very reason his order was founded. History (to make sense of anything that might be found general vs area-specific): Native tribes of the area left scattered accounts of ravenous creatures living in the dark hollows of the mountain, and one account even mentions ancient warriors and shaman killing or binding one to the earth, somewhere in the area, but the location is certainly lost to time. Research (looking for anything about regional archaeology/anthropology): Very little is done in this case academically, or at least the Whitlach library doesn’t have much. Anthropology (to make sense of any anthropological search results) As above.Archaeology (to make sense of any general vs region-specific archaeological search results): As above. Research (looking for anything about local wildlife -- usual or unusual): The area is rich in all manner of animal types, it likely would be easier to tell one what animals aren’t in the area. Research (looking for anything about the paranormal/psychic): The whole situation does seem to scream paranormal, maybe not so much psychic. As to the specifics, very much likely some manner of long-lived cunning monster. Lore: Paranormal & Psionics (to make sense of anything that might turn up): Isaiah’s theory of it possibly being a Wendigo certainly has some weight. Research (looking for anything about religion/the occult): Unless whatever is doing this has a cult associated with it, unlikely. Lore: Demons & Monsters (in case they find anything about monsters in the local religious/occult information): No further insight. Research (looking for anything that just seems unusual): The fact Captain Whitlach’s library is in such disarray, seems odd, like the man was specifically hiding something. Literacy: Latin (in case they find anything written in Latin, which was historically widely used as an academic language in Europe well on up into the middle of the 20th century): While plenty of the books are indeed in Latin, none of the ones needed seem to be.
With polite goodbyes the investigators take their leave from the Caslow’s and Ezikiels Sporting Goods. A brief and fruitless search for Jake, leaves the crew no choice but to cut their losses and head back home. The trip is peaceful, as the season of spring is truly in full force, leaving the mountainous valleys and hills in dazzling color. It takes the investigators about an hour or so to get back to Prosperity, ironically once the interstate is finished being built, the trip likely will only take thirty minutes instead.
Whitlach Manor is quiet and dark when the investigators arrive, but to trained eyes nothing seems out of place. So once inside, candles and lamps are lit and the crew gets to work between the two libraries looking for books and journals that may have some manner of information they need. The work is slow, tedious, to the point of mind numbing. Frequent breaks for beverages and food happen, It is found to be most convenient to do the actual research in the dining area, as the library is more designed for an individual versus a team of investigators.
Dark slowly descends upon the manor as the sun dips behind the mountains, and here we still find out investigators cups of coffee and sandwiches scattered among crumbling leather bound books and scrolls of history written on deerskin. A knock at the door generally shocks the quietness of the situation.

Zachary looks through yet another book, trying to discern whether he is even reading English anymore. As he puts the book aside and picks up another one, he gives Isaiah a nudge on the ribs. “Didn’t you ah, say you reorganized this library? Maybe a couple books were misplaced?” Zachary jolts from his book as the knock is heard, nearly knocking over a few items on the table. Turning to the rest of the group, Zachary speak in a low voice “Were we expecting anyone to show up? Carl’s usually over by that diner, and I doubt the Bellwood folks would have made the trip all the way here. Perhaps George? Who else was on that captain’s journal of names?”
After hearing the response (assuming there is one), Zachary parts the curtain to attempt to catch a glimpse of whoever might be outside. If it is someone familiar or if the person cannot be seen, Zachary opens the door. “Hello?,” he says.
If Isaiah or Nigel object, Zachary will refrain from opening the door.

Isaiah doesn't consider Jake's absence as all too important, as the man has up and vanished before, though Isaiah does feel a little guilty about leaving him in a nearby town. Shouldn't have wandered off, none of us should need a babysitter considering our knowledge of what is in the dark. Isaiah muses. Isaiah is grateful for the peaceful drive while he goes over what he learned from the Caslows and tries to nail down what he's looking for this time. When he gets back, he gets started with the help of the other two.
Zachary wrote:“Didn’t you ah, say you reorganized this library? Maybe a couple books were misplaced?”
Isaiah scoffs with a roll of the eye. "I said I was in the process of reorganizing it. This library had no sense of order that I could find when I first looked through it. Now I at least have an idea where most books are." Isaiah remarks as the trio dig down into researching. Isaiah is at home digging through books, able to read what many would consider boring for hours. Then the knock comes.
Zachary wrote:“Were we expecting anyone to show up? Carl’s usually over by that diner, and I doubt the Bellwood folks would have made the trip all the way here. Perhaps George? Who else was on that captain’s journal of names?”
Isaiah does nearly jump at the sudden knocking and looks to Zachary and Nigel. "Just those names, Carl, George and the Caslows." Isaiah answers looking up at the ceiling as if trying to point his ear towards the door and listen for another knock. While Zachary moves towards the curtain and then (possibly) the door, Isaiah instead takes a few seconds and opens himself to the Supernatural, then opening his empathy to get a read on the intentions of whomever might be outside the door.

Nigel groans as he knuckles his back after several hours of being hunched over what feels like a bibliographic pigsty of a library. Whatever you may have been in life, Captain, you were certainly NOT a librarian.
"Well, gentlemen, let's recap. According to local folklore it would seem that this area has been a veritable hot spot for the paranormal and supernatural for at least as long as there have been human beings living here. Probably even longer. I've found references to a kind of ongoing 'shadow war' along with accounts of ravenous creatures living in the mountains, and even one account of ancient warriors or shamans killing... something... and 'binding it to the earth' somewhere around here. You may be on the right track with thinking it could be a Wendigo, Mister Splindt. The part about earth binding sounds like driving a stake through a vampire's heart, so I wouldn't rule that out either." He shakes his head. "Whatever it is, I'd be willing to wager more than a few pounds on some sort of monster with an extended lifespan and a fair amount of raw cunning." He looks at Zachary and Isaiah. "What have you two found out?"

"Saying some books may have been 'misplaced' is like saying a chap struck by lightning is 'feeling under the weather' -- it just doesn't quite do it justice," Nigel chuckles. "Honestly, I don't think this library could be any more disorganized if he did it on purpose..." Nigel's voice trails off, as if a thought suddenly struck him. "Hmmm... I wonder. Could it be..." He looks around at the other nearby rooms to see if they were as disheveled as the library. The man wasn't exactly a meticulous housekeeper, but it's odd that his library would be such a disaster. Were you trying to hide something, Captain? Or are you trying to tell us something? Maybe playing 'leaf in the forest' with us from beyond the grave, hmm?
He turns to Isaiah. "You said you were 'in the process' of organizing the library? How far had you gotten by the time we met? Are all the materials approximately in the same location where they are now?"

The knock at the door momentarily brings Nigel's current ponderings to a halt. "Either of you expecting company?" Upon hearing Zachary's and Isaiah's responses, he frowns. "Unexpected company at this hour is rarely the harbinger of pleasant news... still..." He notes that his danger sense isn't tingling but he holds up a finger as Zachary moves towards the door.
He reaches out with his psychic abilities to search for supernatural evil nearby as well as 'listen' for any stray surface thoughts on the other side of the door... and while he doesn't actively eavesdrop on his two companions (because that'd be rude) he doesn't actively try to block them out either.

Finally, with a grumble, he mutters an incantation under his breath in a language he doesn't know to detect the presence of magic and otherwise invisible beings in the immediate area.

He nods to Zachary and slips his hand into his pockets, getting a grip on his pistol and his brass knuckles, while moving away slightly from the doorway.

The investigators cautiously approach the front door, strangely there is no manner of way to see who may be at the door. Nigel manifests a few mental tricks opening his mind to possibilities, while also quietly casting a pair of simple spells. None of the senses bring up anything though. So with no other option, save not opening the door, the door gets opened. And standing at the door is Carl with a paper sack in hand. ”Evening Gentlemen.” Carl says before stepping into the mudroom. Nigel, with Telepathy active, finds Carl’s mind closed to him.
”I brought some food, and figured you may need someone to talk to.” Carl says as he makes his way to the dining room table. Carl takes a few moments to pull some wrapped bundles of food onto the table, before making his way to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. ”So what is the mystery?” Carl asks as he comes back in and sits himself down, briefly perusing the books and journals on the table.
