It's been several days since you made your way to Chicago. The city is not what it once was. The glory, lights, people, and atmosphere is but a shadow of what it used to be. Crumbling buildings dot the skyline, jutting up like bones from the ground. Water, power, heat. All of these things are commodities, and rare ones at that. Fires burring to keep people warm in the cold of the winter is the norm. A thin haze settles around the city from the smoke adding even more to the oppressive feeling of doom. The cold winds constantly swirl about adding to the uneasy feeling permeating everything. The NEMA forces begin shifting their focus away from defeating the apocalypse and towards ensuring there are people who are able to survive it. Many unknown variables are in the works and no one has good answers.
NEMA has been taking volunteers to join the militia to assist in the fighting. Your group has been segregated from the others. Now Captain Gomez arrives this morning to bring news of your fate. The doors of the elementary school you have been staying at groan in protest as the cold does what it can to keep them sealed.
Gomez looks irritated, ”Alright. Listen up. I’ve managed to convince people that you’re worth keeping around. While NEMA is hard up for people, those who have been exhibiting…”abilities” have been taken elsewhere. Your actions in guarding the convoy have helped give you this chance to do some good. I have been assigned as your liaison to the NEMA forces here in Chicago. Staff Sergeant Matcher will act as your military advisor and my aid when you are not in the field.” She pauses for a moment to let her words sink in. ”Now understand. There are a lot of people in need of help and NEMA only has so many resources. So you’ll get to choose and/or volunteer for missions that you feel will fit your abilities. Oh and before you ask. I have been given permission for a couple of NEMA personnel to train those who used to be civilians in the basics of combat, however after your showing, I’m not sure what they can teach you that actual battlefield experience hasn’t. Either way you’ll get about one…maybe two months worth of training before taking on your first mission.” Her look softens a bit, ”Now what questions do you have for me?”
