Happy new year indeed. I guess you can toast to your survival.

It's been several days since you made your way to Chicago. The city is not what it once was. The glory, lights, people, and atmosphere is but a shadow of what it used to be. Crumbling buildings dot the skyline, jutting up like bones from the ground. Water, power, heat. All of these things are commodities, and rare ones at that. Fires burring to keep people warm in the cold of the winter is the norm. A thin haze settles around the city from the smoke adding even more to the oppressive feeling of doom. The cold winds constantly swirl about adding to the uneasy feeling permeating everything. The NEMA forces begin shifting their focus away from defeating the apocalypse and towards ensuring there are people who are able to survive it. Many unknown variables are in the works and no one has good answers.

NEMA has been taking volunteers to join the militia to assist in the fighting. Your group has been segregated from the others. Now Captain Gomez arrives this morning to bring news of your fate. The doors of the elementary school you have been staying at groan in protest as the cold does what it can to keep them sealed.

Gomez looks irritated, ”Alright. Listen up. I’ve managed to convince people that you’re worth keeping around. While NEMA is hard up for people, those who have been exhibiting…”abilities” have been taken elsewhere. Your actions in guarding the convoy have helped give you this chance to do some good. I have been assigned as your liaison to the NEMA forces here in Chicago. Staff Sergeant Matcher will act as your military advisor and my aid when you are not in the field.” She pauses for a moment to let her words sink in. ”Now understand. There are a lot of people in need of help and NEMA only has so many resources. So you’ll get to choose and/or volunteer for missions that you feel will fit your abilities. Oh and before you ask. I have been given permission for a couple of NEMA personnel to train those who used to be civilians in the basics of combat, however after your showing, I’m not sure what they can teach you that actual battlefield experience hasn’t. Either way you’ll get about one…maybe two months worth of training before taking on your first mission.” Her look softens a bit, ”Now what questions do you have for me?”

Perception (24%, standard): 1d100: [40] = 40
JIC (d20/d%): 1d20: [17] = 17 / 1d100: [85] = 85

Liam is not entirely certain of the wisdom of selecting Chicago as the place to set up a permanent survival base for the apocalypse. It is far enough north to get severe weather, and the location near the lake means massive snowfall in the winter. The massive local populating means there is a constant need to gather food. It is also not a manufacturing center, nor is it located near particularly useful resources.

What it does have is a central location and a transportation hub. It also has a large supply of fresh water.

When asked what he wants to study, Marconi will respond, "I have been having...odd experiences...near the blue zones. If others did not corroborate them, I would wonder if I was hallucinating. As it is, what I can do needs to be studied. I have encountered one or two others who seem to be able to do similar things, perhaps more like me can be found and trained as a resource."

He seems to have mixed feelings, the Blue Zones are dangerous, but only there can what he does be studied, catalogued, and possibly even understood.

He does add after a bit of consideration, "These days, the areas where the blue lines are can be pretty dangerous, I might need training in survival skills."

Falcon looks up from where he is oiling Rex’s freshly repaired body armor. As he recognizes Gomez his right hand moves away his holster where it had been resting upon hearing the new arrival. A moment later he recognizes not one, but two bars ”Room, Attention!!” he says, slightly above his regular voice level. Falcon snaps to attention with a crisp salute. Nora and Rex follow suit standing at a canine version of attention.

Once released from attention by Gomez, he and the hounds move closer to hear what she has to say.

Falcon takes the lead on this, but thinks as he speaks. ”First question. How have you gone from First Sergeant to Lieutenant to Captain in, like, two weeks? That is normally 4 years at least. F@(k up, move up? How am I still a Staff Sergeant and can’t even get Marconi from PFC to Corporal? The least you can do is finish the paperwork for Marconi and get Shepard form civilian to Private – E-1. It would help if his being a NEMA bootlicker were made official. It would also help if I were a Sergeant First Class or First Sergeant to help with the autonomy issue and decrease the fight with quartermaster. Not that the pay will change.”

That finished he backs up, realizing he, once again, has bullied his way forward.

Listening to Marconi Falcon realizes what an asset he is. Not just when fighting demon babydoll caterpillars, but his mind as well. We need to stop lurching from emergency to emergency. ”I support that and whatever Shepard decides. Our team is good and knows what it needs best. Speaking of which, I am good at what I do, but we don’t always need that. Any chance I could get some training time with the Roscoes? Maybe a suit of their armor as well to increase flexibility? That way, when you don’t need me killing things I can be rescuing them.” Falcon pauses a moment to think, then continues. ”We could probably use a 4th member as well. Trying to be everything to everyone is difficult with three and I will have a list of gear for you in a day or two. Starting with one of the combat ATV’s or similar.”

Looking around Falcon takes a breath and indicates for Marconi and Shepard to add any thoughts.

Shepard glances at his wrist watch and sighs before looking back up at the ceiling from the comfort of his makeshift cot in one of the classrooms that served as a sort of barracks. Sleep hadn't come easy since the world went to hell and ever since the group's most recent ordeal, it'd become even more difficult to catch a few winks.

Suddenly, that familiar feeling of being watched starts to creep up on him and he shudders, but not from the cold. He turns over on his side to glance out the window. Nothing but darkness and stars. After watching for a moment he turns over on his other side, away from the window, satisfied that nothing was really out there. The NEMA shrinks told him it was probably a form of anxiety brought on by intense trauma. They don't know the half of it...Shepard mused. He picked up the ceremonial dagger laying beside his things and slowly unsheathed it. They're still trying to find a scientific explanation for everything that's going on and coming up with diddly dick.

He runs a finger across the grooves and and strange markings carved into the blade before sheating it and clasping it to his chest. Holding it seemed to stave off his anxiety and after a few moments he drifts off to sleep.

A knock at the door of the classroom causes Shepard to sit up straight in his cot.

"Agent Shepard? They're expecting you in the briefing room, sir."

"Shit!" Shepard spits as he haphazardly throws his clothes on and runs out the door and past the NEMA soldier standing by the door.
Shepard grimaces as he opens the door slowly and creeps into the room. Thankfully, it looked as though they hadn't been there long.

When Gomez's gaze falls on him, Shepard speaks up sheepishly.

"Well, Captain, I suppose I wouldn't mind getting a bit more weapons training, or perhaps a bit of a NEMA vehicle crash course. They showed us how to handle ourselves back at Quantico, but I'm no soldier.

Shepard scratches his head, thinking for a moment before deciding to add a bit more.

"Also, I know it might sound crazy, but I was something of an Occult buff back at the Bureau. Used to look into cases that were a bit um, strange, one might say. I would like to have the opportunity to have a look at any texts, recordings, anything really on the occult and the strange. I know the scientists have their theories, but maybe we need to be looking at things from another perspective. Um, Ma'am."

Liam listens and nods slightly.

Liam says, "Actually, that meshes well with my theory that the Blue Line Eruption is a recurring phenomenon that is the source of many myths and legends. People like myself have a mutation that allows us to utilize the released energies. Possibly occult and mythological tales, while written from the perspective of those without the scientific method, could contain information that could be gleaned about some of the previous contacts with beings that came through the bridges in the past."

Falcon looks at Shepard and considers what would help the most. Wonder if his interest in the occult came from high school DND, Rifts, and BattleTech.

"Shepard, if you want to study other things, I'd be happy to give you basic rifle instruction during our down time. Given enough time, we might be able to touch on a couple weapons and skills."

CPT Gomez glares at Falcon, ”You think we’re getting paid? The entire economy has collapsed. We’re on a barter system right now. And I’ve only been given the rank as a way to keep me out of other affairs. My only job is to act as a go-between for you guys.” Gomez’s expression softens as she looks at Liam, ”Yes. The blue zones. Why do you think you all have been segregated from the other refugees? You know there are those in higher leadership positions who actually believe that you will lose your minds and kill me, giving them an excuse to begin attempting to eradicate all traces of the blue zones influence. Those are few voices right now and we’re trying to keep it that way. As far as I’m concerned we need all the help we can get and you all proved yourselves with the convoy. That’s why you’re being given this chance to help. Make the most of it.” Gomez seems to have briefly lost the mask of military professionalism and spoken directly from the heart.

And as soon as it was there it was gone. CPT Gomez looks down at her notes, ”Liam, you’ll be allowed to visit a near-by blue zone under escort. Agent Shepard, the library is open to you. I’ll make sure you have access to it and to any additional individual weapons training you’d like. Sergeant Macher I’d like you to be part of the escort team for Liam. In case anything should go pearshaped I know you’ll be there to assist him. She looks around at the faces of everyone present. ”The command has allotted two months for training you. Once that is complete, I’ll bring you a selection of missions that need to be accomplished. Any final questions?”

Liam nods at the part about the current economy, money of any kind has always had an arbitrary value based on the belief in the strength of the government backing it. Without a trusted central government, there is no value to any money, so barter is a requirement.

Liam replies, "Frankly sir, there have been times in the last few weeks when I have doubted my own sanity. If they believed the reports without question, I might well doubt THEIRS. The fact that they are giving me a chance to run these tests just goes to show how crazy the world has become."

Liam thinks, No matter how strange things have been, I have to treat them as real, because failing to do so could get me killed. Better to be alive and doubt my sanity, then dead and sane.

Liam looks over at the Falcon, "If I am going to be staying out in the wild areas to study the Blue Zone, I am going to need to know a bit more about living off the land. We are not going to get a lot of studying done if we have to dome back every few days for supplies."

Falcon furrows his brow, well as much as he can, at Gomez’s response. ”Gomez, hence the ‘not that the pay will change’ comment. Do I need to start holding up a ‘SARCASM’ sign for you? We used to joke officers had to give up a portion of their brains each time they promoted, but….”

Falcon slows to take a breath. It has to be stressful on her. She is not reacting like the person I know. ”And it doesn’t change the point. Right now I have the rank of every other squad leader in NEMA. It would help if I had a rank that would open more doors if we are going to be a special forces unit.”

With this Falcon is obviously pissed, but makes sure to focus his ire on Gomez, not Marconi. ”Fine! I’ll play babysitter…again. At least I won’t need to kidnap a team and get them in hot water to get my charge back.”

With this Falcon storms off, but not so far he can’t hear the rest of the conversation. All I wanted was roscoe training. People are getting hurt and killed because I can’t help them. I’m a killer, not a hero.

Shepard nods to Captain Gomez. "Thank you, ma'am. I'll get to work right away. He watches Falcon storm off and frowns. I think he might regret that, later, but... I get it. He's been through a lot these last few weeks. He gives Marconi a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "If either of you need me, I'll be at the library. Who knows? Maybe I can find out something about your... condition." He flashes Marconi a half smile and heads off to the library.

Over the next few weeks, Shepard throws himself into his research. He scours the library for anything that might be of use: books on the occult, alien abductions, ESP, shamans. Anyone coming to visit will find one of the tables in the library stacked high with dusty books and littered with empty and half-full coffee cups.

Most of the time, Shepard sleeps in the library as well, having set up a cot in order to have easy access to his research. He only eats what he needs to subsist and looks haggard, his stubble having grown nearly into a proper beard. The only time he leaves is to shower and to escape to the firing range with Falcon in order to learn the ins and outs of some of heavier NEMA weapons.

Shepard will scour the library's available resources to find whatever he can that might assist him in understanding the world's current situation:

Lore: Native Americans (42%) - 1d100: [24] = 24
Lore: Religion (95%) - 1d100: [50] = 50

He will also work on trying to acquire some skill with heavier NEMA issued weapons: Try to acquire W.P. Energy Rilfe skills.

Over the next two months everyone comes to the same conclusion…The world will never be the same. Any thoughts of somehow returning to how things once were and the comfortable lifestyles are gone forever. The harsh conditions do improve slightly as people have figured out how to feed and heat several areas of the city. NEMA works to secure areas for people to live. A Thriving Black Market soon takes root with gangs becoming the owners of parts of the city.

Liam and Falcon spend most of their time close to a nearby blue zone. Over time both of them come to better understand Liam’s abilities. The blue zone is more than they thought. Liam comes to the realization that he’s pulling power directly from the blue zone. Through his will he is controlling a force he can not explain. After a month he starts getting briefed by CPT Gomez on his findings. “Magic” is what it’s being called. It is fitting as some things you have figured out really do defy the law of physics.

Falcon gets first hand experience of this “magic” and comes to a much better understanding of it. He does have additional training, put on by one of the surviving search and rescue teams. In passing he does hear that CPT Gomez pulled some strings for them to be available during Falcon’s off time.

Shepard is able to expand his knowledge base in the Library. He combs through many texts regarding pantheons and demons. Legends of every type. Many are not helpful, but he is able to find several very old texts regarding the time of Atlantis. It seems to describe some of what people have experienced here. After several weeks Shapard does accompany Liam to the blue zone just to get a better idea of how “Magic” is supposed to work.

As the weather begins to warm and the ice melts, you are resting in the school. It’s been several days since you finished your training regimen. CPT Gomez calls you all to the entryway.
”I hope your training has been fruitful. We’ve been having multiple issues pile up over the last two months. I have three here for you to choose from. First, there’s a sizable farm about 10 miles away. We have not had any contact with them, but a scout team reported seeing activity. Right now with the food shortages, we need all the food supplies we can get. Your mission would be to negotiate with the farmers. Convince them to fall under NEMA and lend their support to the city. Second, We’ve a report of monsters taking up residence 25 miles south in the abandoned town of Pontiac. The scouts reported seeing what they described as Monsters. No additional details. Your mission would be to scout the area and call in airstrikes to eliminate the threat. Third, a supply convoy went missing around the former Del Monte area. Your mission would be to locate and assist them in completing their supply run to Indianapolis. She stops talking and looks at you all. ”I’ll give you time to talk it over. Contact me by radio with your decision and I’ll arrange for transport.” She does pause for any questions before leaving you to decide your course of action.

Knowing how much this annoys Gomez Falcon jumps to attention, ”Room, atten-tion!!” Without waiting for the command Falcon relaxes and walks towards Gomez. Hope she can see the laughter in my eyes.

Falcon raises a hand to get her attention before she goes. ”I do have some questions. I’ll start with the non-mission specific ones. How much leeway do we have? For example, Xyria and her family, hell Marconi, could be considered monsters by some, but not by others. Second, what requisition power do we have? Or do we give you a wish list including the moon and you whittle it down?”

Falcon waits a beat for Gomez, Marconi, or Shepard to chime in. ”Mission specific, and maybe this ties into the second question above, what do we have the authority to barter with? Can we offer security and equipment to the farm? If so, how much? If we find that the monsters could be allies do we have the power to start negotiations?”

He is sure additional questions will come to mind, but stops for answers and crosses his arms, leaning casually against the wall.

Marconi snaps to attention, he has learned to do that much. Unlike Falcon he holds it until acknowledged.

He will listen to the mission statements and will wait until after Falcon speaks and after Gomez replies and leaves before he will give his evaluation.

Liam will prioritize, "The most immediate one is the monsters. If they are an actual threat, they need to be dealt with quickly, before they can move to threaten others. If they are potential allies, we need to find out and make sure our people do not attack them and turn hem into a threat."

He will continue, "The next most immediate is the convoy, if something is raiding our convoys, we need to know. If they are just broken down, getting them up and on schedule is something that should be done quickly."

He will agree, "We need to know what we can offer the farmers before we can negotiate for anything. The farm is the least urgent, but potentially the most important in the long run. If we can swing by there and check to make sure they are protected on the way to one of the others, it might establish good will."

Shepard is thumbing through one of the dusty tomes from the library and making notes while the team waits for Gomez to enter. He has bags under his eyes and his skin has taken on a more pallid sheen. He jumps up to salute, dropping his book to the ground. After an uncomfortable moment, he bends down to pick it up. He breathes a sigh of relief as Gomez goes into her briefing. All of the options sound equally important, but it is at the mention of monsters that piques his interest. He waits patiently while the others say their piece before speaking up.
Liam will prioritize, "The most immediate one is the monsters. If they are an actual threat, they need to be dealt with quickly, before they can move to threaten others. If they are potential allies, we need to find out and make sure our people do not attack them and turn hem into a threat."
"I have to concur with my colleague. Investigating the claims of monsters might provide us the opportunity not only to save lives, but to test out some theories and confirm some of the information I've been going through." The ceremonial knife sheathed on the side of his leg begins to warm ever so slightly at Shepard's words, but he does his best to ignore it.

"Do we have any descriptions of the creatures, ma'am? It may allow us to prepare better for the mission, especially if we can cross-reference the descriptions against what we have available in the library."
"The next most immediate is the convoy, if something is raiding our convoys, we need to know. If they are just broken down, getting them up and on schedule is something that should be done quickly."
Sounds familiar... Shepard thinks as he reminisces on his introduction to the squad. "Ma'am, could these convoy troubles be related in some way to the problems with our own convoy last year?"

Liam admits, "That is a very good question, I should have thought of it myself."

He thinks, Does that change my overall evaluation? Not really, monsters are still most immediate...but it does make finding out what happened with the caravan more important.

CPT Gomez nod, "These are good questions." She turns to Falcon first, "You have hit the nail on the head. Why do you think this group has been segregated? As you said there are some who consider some here to be monsters. The unknown has always frightened people. And that's on even grater display with what has happened." CPT Gomex's tone has softened since she came in. It's almost like she's having to pretend to be something else. A thought crosses Falcon's mind he hadn't considered at her words...are they being monitored? Is that why her attitude seems to have changed? It would explain a lot...

She continues, "As far as requisitions. There are still limited supplies. If you have requests please forward them to me and I'll see what we can get for you. Currently to assist with travel we have a NEMA Humvee that has been assigned to your group." She sighs for a second and she moves with he back facing the entryway. Falcon, and only Falcon, can see that her eyes dart up and to her right as if she's subtly gesturing over her shoulder to the center of the entry way. "The monster mission is to designate the target nothing else. If you don't think you can do it then don't." She moves back to her original position, "As far as what you're authorized to negotiate with. Security mostly. We're not offering to arm them, but NEMA will provide all security for the farm going forward. If they have other demands then relay them to use for consideration." She looks to the rest of the group, "As for the convoy. That's what we were hoping you could investigate for us. We have no idea what's happening to the convoys or why some go missing. I'm sorry I don't have better answers to your questions. There are many unknowns. That's why we need people to investigate these areas." She looks around, "Any more questions?"

Gomez may be a royal pain in the a$$ sometimes and fun to twit, but she was a good NCO and straight shooter. Falcon moves slightly and uses his enhanced senses (Telescopic lens, Thermal Imaging, Amplified hearing – 75’ softer than a whisper, etc.) to see if he can detect what/who is observing them.
Shepard wrote: Do we have any descriptions of the creatures, ma'am?
Gomez wrote:"The monster mission is to designate the target nothing else.
Falcon does his best to understand the subtle meaning behind Gomez’s words. “I agree with Shepard, it will help to know what we are looking for. If we have already determined them as a ‘target’, why not a seek and destroy mission?”

Falcon looks to Marconi and Shepard, willing them to pick up on the subtle cues. ”Well, once we have our answers we will try to make a decision as soon as possible. Perhaps take a walk to clear our heads. Gomez, either way could you have AZ initiate a diagnostic on my hounds and drones. You know, just to make sure they haven’t picked up any glitches or bugs on the trail.” AZ is the only tech Falcon trusts to make sure they aren’t monitored in the field.

Mini Update

Falcon cycles through the optics in his eyes. He doesn't see much, but when he hits the thermals he does note a small thermal anomaly in the area CPT Gomez motioned to right in the center of the doorway. (Roll Radio Scramblers)

CPT Gomez see's that you all are relentless in your pursuit of more information. "Look all we have is a description. Apparently these beings look like bipedal blue crocodiles that are eating corpses. So peopke said 'monsters'. Sounds like an apt description to me. As for why it's not a seak and destroy is that, frankly NEMA doesn't have the forces to both maintain security here and to secure a new city. So they've opted to bomb it while the sky's remain clear. There is still the want to retake and secure the city so they want a team to designate the targets to limit collateral damage to the surrounding infrastructure." CPT Gomez narrows her eyes at Falcon's use of the word bugs as if to say, Don't be so obvious! She does answer his question, "AZ has been busy lately, but I'll see if he can get to your companions. I'm surprised you didn't request this earlier as it's been near two months since the convoy. Must have just slipped your mind. She is very much helping guide the conversation to keep you from really getting yourself in trouble. She looks around once more, "That is about the extent of the information I have for you. Do whatever you want to help you make a decision, you have the watch radio frequency. Please contact them when you've made a decision and I'll come back to get you rolling."

Falcon makes a face and flips her the bird while keeping his hand at his side. Whatever, tying that into computer bugs was clever.

Once the Cpt has left Falcon turns to his team. ”Well guys, suit up. I saw a Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods within walking distance of here. Fingers crossed we might be able to find something useful and the movement will clear the mind.”

Without saying more about the mission Falcon begins to put his armor on and gather his weapons.

Shepard gives a nod of understanding as Gomez finishes up the briefing. He raises his hand sheepishly. "Ma'am. I know you've said supplies are short at the moment, but do you think it might be possible to scare up a vest and a helmet? I'd feel a bit more at ease if I had something a bit sturdier than a long coat between me and whatever we might run into. I'd also be grateful if you could spare anything with a little more kick than my laser pistol."

Shepard stuffs a journal of his notes into one of the interior pockets of his long coat and rushes to catch up with Falcon. "Sporting goods? Well, whatever you say. You're the bossman."

As they head through the city streets, Shepard thumbs through his notebook. "You know. After observing Marconi in action over the last few weeks, I'm almost certain he's working actual magic, or at least some kind of latent psychic ability. Do you know what this could mean? All those legends and about Jersey Devils, Bigfoot, ESP? It might all be true! Anyone want to hear what I've been reading about Atlantis?"

A wide grin crosses Shepards face as he quickly flips through pages in his journal.

Liam says to Falcon, "Something like a bow might not be a bad choice. Arrows are easier to replace than bullets, and there are a lot of things military grade weapons are not appropriate for."

Liam comments to Shepard, "Psychic Abilites are known, they have been seriously studying them in England for some time, and the MOM implants are known to activate such abilities. I would not be surprised if what I am doing is the reason for what was once called magic, though the converse of Clarke's law implies that once what was considered magic is sufficiently understood, it becomes science. As to Atlantis, I though they decided that it was an area in Western Africa that was largely submerged several thousand years ago."

As soon as the team is ready Falcon heads out the door, careful not to speak about anything important or ‘weird’ while still near. He keeps his head on a swivel and his senses dialed to 10 watching for drones, tails, or cameras. Did my best not to become paranoid before the apocalypse. Now look at me. Wish I had my hounds.

”Ok guys. What you say we swing by the armory first? I agree that a newly trained militia member needs to requisition his basic gear and TA-50.”
Marconi wrote: Liam says to Falcon, "Something like a bow might not be a bad choice. Arrows are easier to replace than bullets, and there are a lot of things military grade weapons are not appropriate for."
Falcon smiles at Marconi’s understanding and initiative. ”That is what I was thinking and why I spent so much time looking at plants and on the archery range. Even read about how to make a basic bow and arrows, slings too. If supplies are limited and we are going to be in the field for an extended time we may need to fend for ourselves. Anyone know how to fish?”

(Given that the team posted things after leaving the compound I am going to assume the quartermaster/armorer was willing to make sure Shepard and Marconi had basic gear. Vest, helmet, LBV with canteens, and a double combat load of E-clips. Not looking for a full TA-50 load, just stuff to walk around and survive. If not we can RP that)

Falcon hopes his team isn’t getting too distracted by this. ”Shepard, put the book away and keep an eye out. I know this area is secured, but…. As far as magic. I could see it tied to psionics in a way. A latent mental ability that allows you to control a new energy or force. After all, it would be no different than learning about magnetism and developing ways to harness it to create electricity or fire a weapon.”

As they walk and chat Falcon is glad Shepard waited until they were away from the main area to talk about these things. If people, and command, were getting jumpy better to appear as normal as possible. I hope there is something left in the stores. If not, may have to see if the quartermaster got some of it and I can beg.

Falcon looks to his companions as they walk back empty handed. It appears either civilians or NEMA has systematically emptied the stores in the area. Hope I can get what I am looking for from Quartermaster. It will help save on food supplies and such in the future.

”It appears we are in agreement. We check out the monsters to the in Pontiac. If the farm is not too far out of our way, like in the complete opposite direction, we will swing by there on the way.”

While still walking Falcon opens the direct line to Gomez, tying in both Shepard and Marconi so they can add to anything he may forget. ”Good afternoon ma’am. We’ve made a decision and have put together an item request. We will take the Pontiac mission first. We will need to know how you want us to ping the targets. You also mentioned the farm is about 10 miles away. If it is within reason we can swing by there on the way. If it is in the other direction or takes us too far out of our way we can catch it later. I’m transmitting the request list now.”

As you walk through the remains of Chicago you are given a stark reminder of the desperation of the situation you find yourself in. Only a few months in and stores have been looted. You walk past people on the streets milling about. Looking for anything they can do to occupy themselves in the end of the world. You do pass a long line where people are accepting their daily rations from NEMA troops. There must be thousands of people waiting for their food. Enough time has passed where scuffles in the line are rare.

As you make your decisions and radio Gomez, you make your way back to the school to meet her.

You walk back up to the school to see a Humvee parked out front. It is OD green with the NEMA emblem on the doors. Gomez is leaning against it as you walk up. She nods to you all as you walk up, "Most of what your requested is in the truck. I also added two additional sets of armor on the off chance you need them." She pulls out a map from her jacket and sets it on the hood of the truck, "I have marked the two locations for you on the map. Pontiac is about 80 miles southwest and the farm is on the way. I have indicated their locations. Good luck." She leaves the map and heads out, leaving you to sort through the gear and get on the road.

After you sort through the gear you get on the road. It takes about two hours to get to the farm.

Th city was depressing, so much of the modern world had depended upon rapid transport of supplies. He thinks, With supply chains broken, things are nearly falling apart. THAT is why visiting farms is important.

When Gomez shows up with the Humvee, Liam is glad we got as much as we did. Someone is looking out for the troops, even irregulars like us.

Liam comments, "I do have a tendency to go through armor." In fact, he has pretty much totaled his armor every mission so far, he needs to change that record.

He looks through the gear, "I do not really need any of this right now, aside from refilling what I used already."

The only thing he had wanted really was some combat grenades, but he knew they were in short supply.

As they approach the farm, he asks the others, "How do you want to play things? Send just one in to make contact? Come in with the Humvee?"

Falcon gives a proper salute as he approaches, making sure he sees his two hounds on the other side of the vehicle. I have been giving her too much of a hard time. She is going through a lot too. Before she leaves he makes sure to shake hands. "Thank you. For everything. Wish you could come with us Gomez.”

Once Gomez has departed he takes a moment to take a full inventory and inspection of all the equipment and his hounds/drones. He stores the motorcycle saddlebags, with the drones, in the main cab with the bow, quiver, and arrows. With the help of Shepard and Marconi, they stored everything in the hatch making sure the most important items were easier to get to. The water and fuel cans found their way strapped to the outside of the vehicle.

He then leaves Humvee positions to his team. ”I will run ahead. Leave about 20 meters between us. The hounds will follow behind about 20 meters as well.” Falcon then takes off.
Marconi wrote: As they approach the farm, he asks the others, "How do you want to play things? Send just one in to make contact? Come in with the Humvee?"
As Marconi steps out of the Humvee for the group to speak Falcon hands the 4 plasma hand grenades to him. ”I saw you didn’t get any. I still have my basic load and the rifle grenades. Share with Shepard if you like.” Falcon smiles as he backs up a bit. I hope he can see this as the gesture of trust and friendship it is.

Falcon spreads the map out on the hood of the vehicle and looks around. I propose Rex and I try to get an overwatch position about 1,000’ – 1,200’ from the buildings. Possibly at a 45 degree angle from your approach. When I am in position I can radio you two to approach with the vehicle and Nora to back you up.”

Falcon pauses to look around a bit again, then focuses on Marconi. ”Hey, Clark. Any chance of Superman showing up?” Focusing back on the map. ”Either way, Marconi you are point on the ground. You know what we can negotiate with. If possible, see if we can spend the night camped here as well. That way we can get an early start tomorrow.”[b/]

Falcon looks at each man in turn. ”That is my idea. Any arguments or suggestions are appreciated.”

As they make their way through the city, Shepards looks up from his notepad and slowly stows it away. His heart sinks as he sees the disheartened, defeated looks on the faces of his fellow citizens. It seemed like only yesterday that mankind had finally achieved the impossible: peace, stability, prosperity. Hell, even his own job had never been easier. In all actuality, he would've mostly just been filing reports if he hadn't decided to look into the cult. But now? It looked like...well... the end of the world.

"Christ... How could we have been brought so low, so quick?" Shepard says aloud without thinking.
Shepard's eyes go wide as he surveys the gear in the truck. He nods in thanks to Gomez. "Looks to me like you really pulled some strings for us, ma'am. I appreciate it."

He hefts the assault rifle and pulls back the bolt, exposing the empty chamber. He presses the butt against his shoulder and aims down the irons sights at a point where no one is standing, closing one eye, just like Falcon showed him. He nods in satisfaction and placed the rifle back in the truck.

Shepard stands nexts to his companions with his arms folded, looking down at Falcon's map. When Falcon asks for suggestions, he shakes his head.
"You guys are the experts, so I'll follow your lead. If we see anything out of the ordinary... Shepard taps on his notebook. "Hopefully the research I've been doing will give us an edge."

Everyone organizes the gear in the truck and climbs in. Starting off the roads are generally clear of obstructions. However as you leave the city of Chicago the roads become thick with the lifeless husks of burned out and destroyed vehicles. The travel is slow going taking the routes that have been cleared by previous vehicles, you still end up bumping into several vehicles as you make your way to the farm.

The drive does give you some reprieve from the oppressive nature of the city. While the sky is still cloudy and dower it feels less oppressive then the city. Seems the fresh air does a body good and the two hour trip seems over in the blink of an eye.

As you maneuver your way to the farm you see it long before you get there. The several hundred acres of land has been carefully cultivated. While impressive in it's size, the farm would only be able to help ease a small portion of food shortage that is currently being experienced. Falcon doesn't find a good over watch position for the farm within the distance of his weapons. So he settles for manning LHX-288 Rapid-Fire Pulse Laser in the turret.

You observe roughly fifty people working in a field. They are using several beasts of burden to pull a plough. As you drive up there is a dirt road splitting the fields leading to a large homestead in the center of the farm lands. The people are a mix of men and women. One thing that does catch your eye is that they are dressed in all white linen garments. Despite the laborious work the clothes seem to be pristine. Maybe its the distance but the clothes seem to almost shine?

As you approach the homestead, you don't see any good places where you'd be ambushed from. The route is very open and exposed for nearly 3 miles in all directions as there are no crops currently growing so all the fields look like bare dirt. Those of you who are sensitive to magic can feel a blue zone within a half mile. A petite brown haired girl comes jogging out to meet you before you get to the homestead. "Hail! Warriors of NEMA! She yells out as you bring the vehicle to a stop about 250 yards from the homestead. She speaks in amore normal tone, "What can our humble people do for you this fine day." You do notice the pristine nature of her clothes. It's almost as if the dirt is afraid of clinging to the garment.

Before they leave, Liam answers Shepard, "It is quite simple, dependence of technology. We need working technology for everything from growing food to transporting it and storing it. Anything that disrupts technology, causes a cascading failure in the chain of supply and demand."

The farm is amazingly large for a place being handled by primitive technology, though nowhere near enough to supply everyone in Chicago, it will be a help if they can be persuaded to trade.

Liam is mot certain he is the right person for the job, but he will try his best. He DOES look normal enough, for people like this, that may matter. He notes the blue line in the distance, not close enough for him to use, but if required he might be able to reach it by running to it.

He will greet the girl, "Hail young lady. While I personally work with NEMA, I am a simple Militia Recruit who is helping them. We came by to see if you needed any help, as we are on our way to another task."

He thinks, *There are a number of odd things here. The size of he farm is huge for the number of people with so little technology. Those robes that seem to repel dirt. The fact that this place seems so peaceful when nearly everywhere else seems to be in a state of siege, especially anything this close to a blue line."

He may mention trade, but only if ht fits into the conversation. This is simply a goodwill gesture right now.

Shepard shuts off the engine and steps out of the driver's side door of the humvee. He grabs his notebook off the dashboard and tucks it into one of the pouches of his load bearing vest. Shepard takes a moment to take in their surroundings as Marconi makes his way towards the farmers. There was an undeniable air of tranquility that permeated the area. Shepard closes his eyes for a moment and takes a deep breath of fresh air. After all that time cooped up in the library, he had to admit that it was good to be out and about. Opening his eyes again, he tucks his helmet under one arm and strolls over to where Marconi is chatting with the locals.

Shepard is mostly content to observe quitely as Marconi chats up their hosts. His investigative mind begins to kick in and a thousand questions begin to run through his mind. It takes a good deal of willpower for him to resist taking out his notebook and jotting things down. There'll be plenty of time for that later. He reassures himself.

The first thing that catches his eye is the fact that they are all dressed the same. Maybe some kind of religious sect? Or...Christ...a cult?

His eyebrows also perk up at the woman's strange greeting. Who the hell says "hail" anymore? A bunch of DnD players? Maybe a UFO plucked them right out of King Arthur's court and dropped them in the present.

Shepard's keen eyes pick up on a few details of the woman's dress. The fabric is much too plain and coarse for anything to have been made by a factory or modern techniques. More then the clothes, you spot a crucifix dangling from this woman's neck. It's been a while since you've seen the symbol of Christianity. Actually you remember this style of dress being described in the Bible. You think you can see a faint outline of translucent blue around both the garment and the crucifix. Similar to the outline you get when you look at your knife. As your mind touches on your knife, you get a flash in your mind. The coppery scent of blood fills your nostrils, the ritual chanting in the background or you hearing, a pure white garment streaked with fresh blood running down it. And your back. No more then the speed of thought has passed. You have no idea what that was. Was it a memory of your time before the rifts, or was it a warning of things to come?

The woman smiles at Liam. How long has it been since he saw anyone smile like this. It's like the end of the world never happened for these people. "Oh. The Heavenly Father provides all we could ask for." Well that confirms the Christianity aspect for Shephard.

Your attention is drawn to a figure emerging from the home stead. It is a man dressed as the woman is and is jogging to clear the distance. He is not armed and seems to have a friendly manner to him. You hear him call out, "Mary! Mary! We've been requested by his Grace! Oh. Who are these people?"
Mary looks back quickly, "Oh these are warriors from NEMA. They were passing through and wanted to ensure our safety before continuing on. See. The Heavenly father will not forsake those in need. Always remember that Joseph."
Joseph finishes walking up next to Mary. "Of course. You tell me that every day it get hard to forget." Joseph looks at you all, "Well please do not let us keep you from your holy mission..." Joseph stops mid sentence his eyes go wide, and he drops to his knees in prayer suddenly. He mutters under his breath and it's impossible to hear what he is saying. After a moment he looks up to you all, "His Grace has requested your presence. He is our leader, even though he would never claim to be. He would like to meet you if you can spare the time."

Falcon shakes his head as Marconi and Shepard take off leaving the vehicle behind. He motions for Nora to go with them and keep the pups out of trouble. Noticing Shepard has his helmet, so his environmental protection, MDC head protection, audio, and HUD under his arm he swears quietly. F#^k!#g new guy. We are going to have a talk.

He slowly climbs out of the vehicle through the top hatch and moves slowly toward the group. Knowing, with his helmet on he looks like any other soldier guarding the vehicle, Falcon stops just inside his enhanced hearing range, close enough to see and hear what is going on but also close enough to cover the vehicle. He leaves Rex at the vehicle to guard it further. Too many weapons and tech to leave sitting.

Falcon opens a com to Marconi. ”Get Shepard to put his d@m# helmet on so he can be up on coms and doesn’t breath in any alien, blue line virus.”

Hearing the request to meet with their leader Falcon heads back to the vehicle. ”Marconi, stall a moment so I can lock down the vehicle and get with you. Rex and Nora, on vehicle guard and QRF.”

He then opens the back and activates a spider drone to sit on top of the vehicle and a flying drone to circle above the encampment at about 300’. Once completed and he is certain all four feeds are connected to his visuals, Falcon jogs at a “human” pace to join the team.
