Ronith fights down a burst of childish embarrassment at losing his grip on his father’s sword. Of all the damnable times… He can feel his cheeks start to flush but fortunately the knight is able to retrieve his blade while still somehow holding Thorn at bay (more or less). Okay old man. You’re not in your pre-centuries anymore. Focus on the job and take this seriously before the big mean Tokanii splits you in two..
Keiko wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 7:00 am"Don't tell me living through the Cataclysm and 200 years Dark Age dulled your edge, old man! You're better then that!"
”Four hundred.” Ronith calls out a retort in exaggerated mock-hurt. Okay, now I focus.
Ronith takes a beat to recover his equilibrium. This was not quite as effortless as he’d hoped. He growls back, ”One thing I’ve learned- nobody’s so good they’re above a bad throw of the dice. You really believe what you said, then hurry up and finish the job. Otherwise it’s your turn.” Ronith doesn’t really expect the barb to goad a knight of Thorn’s experience to attack, so unless it does he will immediately follow up with his own once more. Ever-so-slightly rattled by his near-loss, Ronith continues to keep Skyrender on defense even as he tries to slip Frostfang past Thorn’s defenses.

Who Grant is thinking about
Grant has met James Howlett in the last epic adventure. But it looks like the epic was culled.
I was looking for the 2017 Epic threads but I can't find them.
I found this on the internet archive, but it didn't crawl the actual adventure threads: https://web.archive.org/web/20210516052 ... 61f7e0c269 Did Lloyd nuke them? Or they just hidden?
Grant nods at William's explanation, the mages eyes keep glancing over his shoulder towards the man in the Coalition States armor. I know I've met him. Where were we? It wasn't here on Earth. He was a tough and honorable man, that I do remember. The memory is still hazy. He scowls as the knights continue to duel. He says loudly, "I think you both have proven how well you are able to waggle pieces of metal around. How about you two call it a draw, or if that won't work, blame me for not letting one of you poke a hole in the other."

Looking over at the cyborg, Barracuda raises his eyebrow as if to say Yeah?. Then he says "What's up, man? How did evil me fuck you over? Steal your girl? Kill your goldfish?" Barracuda keeps on eye on the duel and one on the cyborg, both excited for the results of the fight and interested in what the hell this guy wants.

To say the duel is going exactly the way Sir Ronith or any of the Heroes for Hire had predicted it would go just goes to show that none of them are fortune tellers. Keiko can't control her laughter from the corner of the room and Amber actually visibly joins in, nodding along. "Heavy-duty Leather; straight dom. She does it on purpose. Her choice of weapon? A whip. Rumor her personal guard are demons." Amber says, nodding towards Keiko in a teasing manner. "I don't think he would've kicked you out either way." Amber adds with a side-eye. Daisuke, Keiko and Grant can all see the way Sir Thorn reacts to Ronith is as though he has fought him before. Grant does read the surface thoughts of the black armored man and hears the thoughts of Captain James Howlett. Looking near the same as the one from his own timeline, possibly with one or two extra scars and the same gruff scowl. The large Tokanii knight prompts another disarm and then falls into an attack that forces Ronith to use Skyrender instead. Ronith finds that Sir Thorn is answering all of his attacks almost equally and then getting a cut in for good measure before the large Tokanii brings his large hand up mid-fight; bringing it to a pause before backing Ronith into a corner.
Sir Thorn stares at Ronith and seems to smile while letting loose a chuckle. "We're done. I trust you, Sir Ronith. You fight like a Knight before our nightmare; and I've been fighting you for years. The Emperor seems to like to fight like a Knight as well, even though he has soured what it means." Sir Thorn says. "We can continue if you want, or plan for the mission that will get you and your team home?" Sir Thorn offers, extending a hand towards Ronith. Daisuke spots Ronan retrieve Ronith's blade so swiftly those with long hair or fur feel a light gust of wind before handing it to Sir Ronith. "How 'bout we say you're both awesome and go kick some evil emperor's ass?" Ronan comments.
When Barracuda directly addresses the cyborg that's been staring at him since he arrived, his head moves slightly as his arms uncross. "You wiped out the Lemerians." He answers directly, standing and prompting silence after Sir Thorn's last comment. Grant sees Captain Howlett stand when the Cyborg stands, promptly alerted to the increased hostility. The Cyborg then walks out of the room. Keiko is able to break the silence with her questions to Amber who appears to gladly and loudly answer Keiko as if to attract everyone's attention to them. "Yeah, so our endgame is the pyramids destroyed. Natural Ley Lines can be allowed to exist on the planet again without being wells for some dark god. Oh, and hopefully scratch one evil god from the megaverse." Amber says, looking to Sir Thorn and Sir Ronith with a nodding smile. Amber glances over to Baz and motions for him to come over join her and Keiko. "Baz here is a newer arrival as well, not from our plane either but has been helpful in studying the pyramids." Amber explains, still attempting to refocus attention.

Daisuke's eyes open slightly at the demonstration of extreme alacrity.
Ho ho ho, he moves like Bocci. Wonder if he has any other tricks up his sleeve.
Yes... I wonder the same... Daisuke muses internally.
Reaching out with his super-ability, the Arismal mimics Ronan before taking some time to assess the powers coursing through his body.
Once the duel officially concludes (by Sir Ronith's acknowledgement of Sir Thorn's halting of the combat demonstration), and the discussion returns to plans for the mission to destroy the pyramid, he will ask their hosts, "How much recon has been done on this pyramid structure? What anti-tamper measures are in place that will require us to bypass or defeat? And is there an estimate for how much explosive power in what critically vulnerable locations will be required to cause its destruction?" As the conversation matures, Daisuke will remind the others of his ability to discretely transport copious amounts (600 lbs) of explosive ordinance within his swallowing limbo.
Additionally, he will offer, "And if Omega Emperor Ronith is such a committed duelist, then perhaps a challenge to duel could somehow be used as a means of distracting his attention away from sapper infiltration." A concerned look clouds Daisuke's expression, "There is a non-zero chance that we will need to each face our evil Omega versions in solo combat before this operation is done."
Yes my friend, that would be the sweet justice of karma finding balance. Kondo chimes.
They will be versions of ourselves that are wholly entrenched in power with access to all the benefits such absolute power may entail.
Are you afraid of some trinkets or technological mumbo jumbo that would tip the advantage against you?
I would be a fool not to consider the possibility.
And you are no fool.
Daisuke, seeming lost briefly in some sort of internal monologue, pauses at Kondo's unexpected compliment. Deciding not to push further, he leaves the comment in the air, giving the equivalent of a mental nod, but not acknowledging it with further discussion.

Keiko looks down at her belt at her own plasma whip hanging from her belt. She's really not far off from me. I would actually love to speak with her...I'm really wondering how much we should have been sneaking around earlier. I really wonder if we had presented ourselves to Omega-Barracuda if they would have helped speed us on our way back to our own reality...nah. Likely would have killed us. Would have been far easier.
Keiko grins at Amber, "Well I guess she really is like me. I bet she's got a Whip of Pain on her belt if she's known as a torturer. I wonder how she gets around the problem of having her fur bunch up in those leather outfits. I could never get them to work right. I always looked liked a squished fuzzy pillow. Demons as bodyguards...I can see that. She could have gone down the path of a shifter and formed contracts with them. It was something I was actually looking into before we ended up here...Well not the demon thing, but the shifter can move between dimensions with ease. Actually wish I could have pursued that path, it would have made getting home very easy."
Keiko watches as the fight comes to an end. "Finally. You two finish measuring? Who's psi-sword is bigger?" Keiko giggles as she jokes with them.

Remember you are a different person then the the one who shares your name here." Keiko gives him a warm smile as she looks to comfort him.
When the conversation gets back to something mildly productive Keiko speaks up again. "Ok. So no more sucking the planet dry...check. I guess keeping it simple is good. You said there are many around the world? How many are we looking at? Also how have you approached this war so far? Have you been knightly about it or have you resorted to guerilla tactics? It seems like there is a large number disparity. Can you provide an overview of the forces you have against the enemy and how they are dispersed?" Keiko looks up fully expecting push back on getting such sensitive information, "Hey I get it. You're hesitant to give sensitive details to us. But if we are to help everyone here then we need to know exactly what we are facing. We need hard facts and everything you've already tried and how it was countered. Cause lets face it. If your way was working you wouldn't be this desperate.
Keiko turns to Daisuke, "A duel wouldn't be a bad idea as a distraction if we were only talking about a small or equally sized force. If this is a global operation, as Amber has said, then the impact of a duel would be negligible. While it might work for what ever area the duel would occur in it wouldn't matter in the large scale." Keiko thinks for a moment. "Actually if you were able to convince Omega-Ronith to agree to hand over power if he lost, then that might be worth it. But I don't see him taking that offer."

With the noise of the duel over, Grant focuses on what they've share so far. We are counting on the destruction of one well to make the difference, and if successful weighing the freedom of the ley lines versus the lives of the people living around it. If Odin or whomever the entity is pretending to be him is using this energy to fuel a ritual, what would so powerful a being want to use it for? Wasn't the coming of the rifts the Ragnorak promised to the religion associated with these gods?
The mage asks his own questions after Keiko and Daisuke, "Has the construction of more Wells stopped? If they are still being built, then destroying an active one may have some impact, but may just be a momentary setback if they are continuing to bring others online. I think we need to take what you here have discovered the last time you raided a well, and leverage that to uncover the truth about the end game."
"If we are to impersonate our opposites to gain entrance, we will need to study them. Do you have any video of them?" He pauses for a second, I need to come up with a name for my alternate."I will need to know about Nega-Grant. How he walks, his clothing, interacts with others, ecetera."

Ronith puts up his blade at the sign from Thorn. He nods along readily, trying to conceal his chagrin as he retrieves Frostfang from the floor. He then sheathes his blades and offers Thorn his comparatively small hand. ”A worthy bout. I only wish I’d had more time to practice.”Seems you need it, old man. Looking up at his partner, he is obviously about to break. Tears begin streaming from his eyes and he yells "I'M NOT LIKE THAT!" at max volume. "i'm not like that..." he whimpers at normal volume.
After a few vulnerable moments in Keiko's arms, he works to regain his composure. Wiping his face and straightening his clothes, he stands up and says "We're in. All of us. We have to stop them from doing any more damage. Overwhelming odds, probable death, saving lots of lives. This is what Heroes for Hire stand for."And when I see me... he's gonna get it.
Speaking to whoever's listening in the rebellion, he gives them some tips. "If evil me has the same abilities, energy won't do a damn thing. I'll soak it right up. Hand to hand, same problem. Doesn't hurt in the slightest. You're going to need bullets, and lots of them. I heal fast, so pour it on."

Daisuke nods along with Keiko and Grant. "Perhaps if the analogy is that these magical wells collect magical energy, then each destroyed well is equivalent to knocking over a solar panel array. Useful to reduce the energy collection, but not disruptive to the system as a whole. Our efforts could be more effective further down the line, where the energy is focused or channeled. Does the magical energy undergo any sort of refinement? Or perhaps is it channeled into some manner of central reservoir whose contribution feeds somewhere? Perhaps powering some sort of deific monster posing as the Norse god Odin?"
If this is the case, we absolutely have an uphill battle. And our future may include combat against something so powerful as to have rendered our alternate selves into its service. How did it do that by the way? Could they be acting as puppets to this entity? Or did it truly win their hearts and minds to do its bidding of their own free will?
While he waits for their hosts to share more information about the situation, the Arismal fills his thoughts with 'What If' possibilities trying to work out the logic of their situation.

Questions begin again in a different tone now that the duel, if it could be called that really, was over. Amber takes point in answering initial questions. "Other than the pyramid we were able to infiltrate, only external recon has been done thanks to Captain Howlett's teams. Judging on the first pyramid, we can expect a number of threats from wards, golems and soldiers. We infiltrated using a distraction and blind spot; there are some weaker wards we can take advantage of." Amber explains "Our infiltration of the South American Pyramid was through distraction and subterfuge -- We weren't able to hold out and had to evacuate once they had reinforcements." Amber points to Daisuke "Your Omega-Identity is one of his best enforcers, by the way." She quips with a playful and obviously non-blaming face.
"As for the Emperor, he is less a committed duelist and more an advantageous one. The Knight's Code means nothing to him and he is as ruthless behind a blade as if you had just wronged him personally -- I myself am barely able to weather an encounter with him. Any Challenge would be met with a trap and his similarities to a Knight end at his stance." Sir Thorn adds. "And taking him out successfully would require a team effort, for he wouldn't be alone." Thorn warns. "Though this other version here might be able to off-balance him." Thorn considers aloud.
Keiko moves to consol Barracuda after its disclosed his Omega-Identity destroyed his underwater family-race, with Barracuda struggling to justify the actions under even the most extreme circumstances. Barracuda steels himself then confirming his own intention to help and immediately disclosing his own weakness. This prompts black armored captain to respond. "Huh; explains a few things. When he became regent of Merctown, he immediately removed all combustion-based projectiles. Laser and Energy weapons are easy to come by, bullets, less so." Howlett comments before un-holstering a beautiful carved pistol and popping out it's mag. "For civilians, anyways." He adds with a shrug. "We've got hours of public video appearances of each of your duplicates, except for your Keiko's. That one seldom appears in public, but she's a known sadistic interrogator or 'Judge'; as they like to call her." Howlett states. Baz attempts to get Ronith's attention however for the moment the Alpha-Ronith appears to be focused on the others; Grant, Barracuda and Daisuke all seems to notice Baz's interest in talking to the Heroes out of earshot of the others and Ronith feels the mental itch of telepathy.
"The construction of Wells stopped at Seven. There doesn't appear to be a primary Well, our theory is that all the Wells must be activated simultaneously but by different operators." Amber continues. "We're confident this has some ritualistic purpose. When we held the pyramid we learned it's near endless capacity for magical energies and how readily the energies were to whomever was at the helm. All seven must be activated separately but at the same time for the ritual to properly work... we think. Each Well is just that, a pit holding unimaginable magical energies inside. Destroying one may not stop the ritual, nor should it cause some sort of chain explosion, but it might delay them enough for a final assault on the Emperor." Amber finishes.
"An assault we wouldn't expect your help on. Once we destroy the first pyramid, the ley lines around that region will be opened again and allow us to get you home." Sir Thorn finishes. "As a compromise, we can target the Pyramid in South America; it did not have any civilian population nearby." Thorn offers.
"That'll complicate the final assault." Howlett says, practically objecting. "The Merctown Pyramid is ideal -- The Atlantis Pyramid second best."
"Both of those have high civilian population counts." Thorn quickly counters
"And are the oldest and closest to his base. Our resources are limited, to properly launch an immediate offensive on the Emperor would require--" Howlett begins to counter before Thorn interjects.
"South America will have to do. We'll make due, won't we." Thorn finishes, glancing to Vheld and the two share a glance as the mage nods before the soldier seems to back down. Thorn turns to the rest of the Heroes for Hire. "Together, we take out the Pyramid. I'll lead a team with yours; together we'll infiltrate as Amber did while the Captain organizes an open offensive as a distraction." Thorn states, pulling up schematics of the South America Pyramid. "We plant two specially crafted det-charges set to blow and meet back for exfil. Upon detonation, we'll be able to access to latent explosion of energies to open an accurate portal home for you. Then we continue our assault back here. Not perfect, but accomplishes our goal and gets you home." Thorn finishes.

Enforcer? For those that defy the Emperor, they are greeted with my ugly mug from the shadows?
Ho ho ho my friend. Can you imagine it?! With a tidy inverted triangle goatee and everything?!
Daisuke nods solemnly, then coughs slightly, a sound akin to a stifled laugh. He looks around his surroundings to try to find something that could become a makeshift triangular goatee ((like a piece of black felt)). Should he find it, Daisuke will surreptitiously try to gather the material and attach it to his face. "Omega-Daisuke?" he will ask if he manages to succeed in his self-appointed mission.

Thorn finishes, glancing to Vheld and the two share a glance as the mage nods before the soldier seems to back down.
Daisuke's eyes narrow in suspicion for the briefest of moments. Wait, so is this offer of immediately returning us some altruistic gesture to get us home as quickly as possible? Or is there something nefarious going on that they don't want us to discover once the energy Wells go down?
Turning to the mages in H4H, he asks in earnest, "If upon destruction of an Energy Well, a massive amount of magical energy is released and usable, is that something either of you could also use to advantage?"
With Keiko's help, Corwin gathers his composure and rejoins the others. Speaking with the rebellion helps alleviate some of the guilt he was feeling. "Banning bullets. Sounds like something I would do. If I were him I guess. I dunno anymore."
After his talk with the rebels, he hears Baz calling him and the rest of the crew into the other room. He looks back and nods at Howlett and heads to where Baz is summoning them.
Speaking to Baz, he says "So, what's up kid? You pull us from the planning meeting to talk about travel or is there something else on your mind?"

Seven wells, Grant thinks, and they have one at the MercTown nexus, a minor nexus. Is the location more important than the strength of the nexus? So MercTown, Dwoemer, some place in South America, some place on Atlantis, and three other locations. Where would the others be? Europe, Africa, and Asia? The mage uses his training to dampen down his emotions regarding the loss of the Three, and the revelation for what Corwin's opposite has done to his own people. "Targeting a remote well seems like the better choice. If your ultimate goal is to attack the Emperor's main facility, drawing his forces away would appear to be the more strategic move. Once we have control, if we reveal ourselves, they will come at once." Grant walks a bit more around the table. "With wards, golems and the Omega guards, backed by the power of the well, do you have access," Grant pauses as a memory comes forward.
Memory wrote:Only a month or so ago from his perspective. The team fighting the minions of Splugorth and then Ashlynn...Ashlynn met an entity. She met an entity and agreed to let it in. Grant had lost his magic and was falling, he most likely would have died if Daisuke's non magical powers hadn't saved him.
Grant closes his eyes for a moment, then opens them refocusing. "Do you have access to the spell Anti-Magic Cloud? Whomever casts it first will control the battlefield. That is what you will need if you plan to enage the emperor directly."
The Lord Magi looks towards Sir Ronith and Barracuda, and then back to Amber and her team, "You have given us much to think about, I think we need a few minutes to discuss privately what we think is the best course of action." Grant joins the others to discuss if they should help or not and then also hear what Baz has to say.

Vheld nods to Grant's question but then holds up a hand before any further thoughts go into it. "Yes -- that spell is available. We have three problems with it's use; first, a good portion of our own fighters are magic users. Second, we have not had the time to confirm, but we believe that the pyramids themselves are warded against such magic. So, the cloud to affect everything outside the pyramid, but those inside would be unaffected. Finally, it is far too draining of a ritual to use and still be effective without the other ambient energies." Vheld explains regarding Anti-Magic Cloud. Taking the information in, Grant and the others request a recess to consider what they have learned.
Sir Thorn, Amber and Howlett look between each other before Sir Thorn nods. "Take time, discuss. If you accept, our attack will be at Dawn." Sir Thorn states and then stands completely, the holographic display vanishing as he looks to Baz. "Baz, please take our guests to the nearby storage room. They can use it as their meeting room for the moment." Sir Thorn turns to Ronith and the others. "Let Baz know when you've decided and he can reach Vheld or myself." Sir Thorn states, then turning to the others in the room "Howlett, see that our forces are ready. Vheld, confirm the status of the portals. Amber, go check on Carl." Sir Thorn orders with various people scattering then.
Baz can lead the group to a relatively large storage room full of sealed containers. Appraise Goods or Find Contraband reveal most of these supplies to be food with various locations on them. Baz knows that these are supply caches for various holdouts scheduled to be delivered. However, anyone who takes time to look notices that the room doesn't appear to have any hidden or overt surveillance, and plenty of the crates provide decent seating.

Things continue to be shrouded in mystery. Why did Sir Thorn and Vheld share a knowing look when the cyber-knight thrust the South American pyramid as the target for the infiltration mission. And why did Howlett object so strenuously? Definitely can't tell who is in the right. Or what hidden agenda each individual might have. There are simply too many unknowns.

Grant nods at Vheld's explanation, his own expression neutral. He follows the others into the storage room. As he takes a moment to inspect the boxes, he says to the Heroes 4 Hire, "It's true, that casting Anti-Magic Cloud would hinder their own troops, but it seems as if the Omega Guards would be far disadvantaged. We are already denied access to the ley lines, so our resources are already limited. If Captain Howlett's..." The name triggers a memory in Grant where they were in a study discussion a multi-versal threat and then jumps to the pair fighting killer cyborg-robots on a spaceship. I am sure I know him! Or at least a version of him. He continues, "troops would probably take the mop to them in a conventional fight."
Later in the conversation, having found a sturdy box to sit upon. "With only seven wells, the need to have them rift us back home seems trivial. We just need to find a ley line or nexus that is unconstrained, I am sure between Keiko and myself, we will be able to get us back home. The real question is, do we help these people or not." He shakes his head and leans back against the wall, "I want to believe these people, if our opposites are bad guys here, does that mean Vheld, Amber, the knight and all the rest are bad guys in our dimension. Sir Ronith, you recognized Vheld, correct, did you recognize any of the others? Oh, and I had forgotten for a moment, Baz? You had something you wanted us to know?" He looks towards the young man curious as to what he will say. When Daisuke mentions fighting their opposites, Grant thinks about what he may learned while at the University of Lazlo about it. "Well, if we can get enough of them together and we repeat what we did to get us here, maybe, we'd all go somewhere else and this world might be saved by their absence." He holds up a finger, "On the other hand, having all of you and our evil us mad at Daisuke and I would probably be a mistake."

Ronith’s face darkens at this, distracting him from the conversation as the others continue. This ‘emperor’ cannot be me. There must be some fundamental difference- or corruption- that explains this. There is no way anything I encountered in the war could have changed me so. How dare he do this in my name.
At the discussion of possible choices of targets, Ronith nods along with Thorn. ”If disabling the network is the objective, and what you say about its structure is true, then any of the wells should suffice regardless of their exact location. I agree with Sir Thorn; we should try to avoid civilian casualties if at all possible. To do otherwise makes you no better than your enemy. Do not allow hatred to blind you to this. Besides, the MercTown nexus is likely to be on high alert after Vheld’s attack.” Even so, Ronith has a decision to make. He will nod along with the suggestions for a team meeting, and after Baz and the rest have finished briefing them Ronith will lead the way to the appointed storage room. As he waits for the others to file in, he will cast an eye over the gathered supplies but dismiss them with a grunt. I’m not hungry anyway.

As for the others, I recognize some names but no-one I have met before, I believe. “ After Baz (and anyone else from the resistance) leaves them alone, Ronith sighs and speaks candidly. ”I don’t like our options. They’re clearly desperate. Maybe that means they can’t afford to double-cross us. Maybe that means they’d cross any line to achieve their goals. Whatever else we’ve learned, I think it’s safe to say that these people are not the same as their doubles from our world. I’m certainly not, and I don’t think Barracuda here is anywhere near capable of genocide.” Ronith smiles thinly at a poor attempt at humor. ”But what are our alternatives? Find a way off the continent, hope we can find an untainted ley line nexus somewhere in Europe or Asia- and Gods only know what the situation is like there in this world- and hope we can figure out a solution by ourselves? Make for Lazlo? I don’t have a lot of confidence that they’ll be able to offer us a better solution. Besides, anywhere in North America that we go, we’ll have to deal with the problem of our infamous identities. I spent centuries skulking about on the outskirts of civilization; I suppose I prefer a solution that involves battle to that. And the fact is, people are suffering because of a man who looks like and claims to be me. Someone should do something about that.” He clenches his right fist. ”I’m not saying we have to solve the problem for them, but at the same time I’m not sure completely turning away is something that I can do. This is going to be a very dangerous mission; at the end of the day, for me it is a question of faith. Not faith in these people, not faith in the wilds of this world, but faith in our team. I believe that if we stick together we can weather anything, and that if we face whatever challenges await us as a team we can come through the other side and make it home. Baz processes everything rapidly. Once Sir Ronith has completed his discussion Baz interjects.
“Ok, first I am not an expert in inter-dimensional physics. I only know what I see and feel. First everything here vibrates a unique dimensional frequency. It is how I am able to see that you and I are not from here. That frequency is key. Despite the fact you share similarities with your counterparts here, your frequency is different. If anything catastrophic were to be the result of those frequencies mingling it would have happened the moment you set foot here. Or when I set foot here.
Sir Ronith, it is admirable that you want to help these people, but the reality is they are beyond help. These pyramids aren’t native. Whatever placed them here had a purpose. The result is multiple pyramids that are like gaping wounds hemorrhaging magic energy and in doing so depriving the rest of the planet. The best explanation is that this world is bleeding out. None of you here will make or break this world. If it is salvageable these rebels can do it without you. But being honest I don’t think they will. We may destroy this pyramid, but whatever designated their purpose will be made aware and I am almost certain 2 things will happen. They will come back here and try to reform the pyramid, and they will try to make sure no other pyramid falls to these rebels, either through the rebels’ destruction or establishing increased security at the other pyramids. In all honesty the plan like this world is most likely doomed. I have been helping because I had few options, hoping to eventually learn how to shift out of here, back to my…potentially our…Earth. But you have given me that possibility now. Your focus should be getting home. This isn’t your fight. This isn’t my fight, that asshole emperor, he isn’t you. You can’t hold yourself responsible for his actions because you didn’t do them.
I am not saying we shouldn’t help them, but if the opportunity arises for you to go home, take it. And I am begging you to take me with you. This whole place feels wrong. It almost hurts to feel what it is going through.”

Vibrations and frequencies common throughout a dimension? So everything birthed from the same dimension carries a fingerprint of the dimension upon it? Daisuke muses, pondering the implications.
Ho ho ho, not so fast my friend. That Baz fellow referred only to this dimension having such a vibration. We should be careful not to jump to universal conclusions about the nature of dimensions.
"Could it be," the Arismal asks aloud, "that this dimensional frequency you speak of could hold clues to the linchpin that might bind this existence together? Does it resonate with a similar vibration to that say of a particular deific being? Maybe the greater power here is some manner of maleficent alien intelligence posing as Odin to forge this dimension into its liking. And if the vibrations can be followed to their source, then a grand unmasking might help our Omega-selves come to the realization that they are not agents of providence, but rather pawns in a dark plot."
Ultimately, Daisuke knows that H4H will go along with the plan, try to disrupt a pyramid for long enough for their non-native selves to return home. Debating such a moot point does not seem a worthwhile pursuit given the lack of other options.

The group begins to converse while a few of the members consider what they have learned and try to think about the fall-out. Grant has rarely encountered this type of issue before, with the idea of alternate realities and varying versions being almost a complete grey area for even the most seasoned dimension hopper. Grant recalls the spell ID Self, one he doesn't know but has heard of in passing, that summons alternate versions of yourself to your aid; it makes sense that such a spell plucks the identities out of realities like this which is where a good or bad version of yourself could appear. As far as anything happening in this realm affecting their own, it's impossible to say without evidence though Grant feels reasonably certain it'll be isolated to this reality.
Ronith makes his stand then recommendation that the group sticks together and helps the alternate identities while Grant is quick to suggest other avenues. Baz does recall that each pyramid is one a separate continent and that magic in each of the continents has been drastically inhibited; Baz can't say for sure that there is not a random roaming ley line free from constraints of the Wells, but he is fairly sure that there isn't. During the discussion, Baz hears the commotion of armored feet moving through the halls; the volunteer fighters moving gear for the attack at dawn.

I believe that if we stick together we can weather anything, and that if we face whatever challenges await us as a team we can come through the other side and make it home. I think we should go.”
Daisuke nods along, "So in summation... We go. Stick together, help them as best we can. If they are able to transport us home, great. If not, there should be enough release of magical energy to facilitate our own return?" The Arismal flashes their two leaders a pair of thumbs up.

When Baz asks to come along, the Arismal looks toward Grant and Sir Ronith, waiting for one of them to assert their leadership decision.
As a bit of minor comedic relief, Daisuke swerves his thumbs from pointing upwards to pointing at Baz before finishing, "And Baz comes with? Part of the 'stick together' plan?"
He feels as though he doesn't belong in this dimension. With an authoritarian regime in charge, I don't want to necessarily stick around either. I can't see any real harm in letting him come along.
What if he is a plant from the Omega rulers of this dimension? Kondo inquires.
I believe that possibility to be fairly unlikely. If he was affiliated with the Omega rulers, then he would have accomplished his goal of infiltrating the rebel forces opposing their rule and so would be implementing whatever plan they have to fully quash the rebellion. And the possibility that he is a plant from the rebellion is also not particularly likely because prior to today, they did not know we existed. Not to mention that their primary goal is a fight for survival against the Omega regime. So we certainly are either a means to an end or at most, a secondary goal to the rebellion.
Yes my friend... Sounds like you have the right of it.
Thank you. Kind of you to say.
Assuming H4H wraps up their meeting in the storage room and return to the very active combat preparations, Daisuke will politely inquire of their hosts, "Do you have any armor, weapons or explosives you can spare? I am, perhaps not as well prepared as I would like to be." The Arismal gestures open-handedly at his own person, being completely devoid of visible armor or weapons.
In case weapons and armor work differently in this dimension. I'd rather be prepared than left scrambling in the middle of combat trying to figure out how to properly disarm one of my opponents for their side-arm. Daisuke justifies to his alter ego without prompting.

"I can ask Vheld. Supplies are protected and used sparingly but I don't think armor and a weapon is beyond the ability of the resistance. Better armor and weapons be on you than in a crate. Quality Armor and weapons may be hard to come by though."

"Food for thought, the rebels are right, the leadership here must be stopped. On my Earth just before things went to shit, I had the hots for a girl in Math Club. She was really into philosophy, so to impress here I read a book called Plato's Republic. Not even sure if Plato is a thing now, but this whole book built a theoretical 'perfect' citizen. He lived in this perfect city and accepted his station, and lived his whole life according to the rules laid out for him. At the end of this book Plato totally mind f**ks the reader and tells this myth of the afterlife where this citizen gets to pick his next life. And after living in this perfect city as a perfect citizen, he chooses the life of a Tyrant. What I took from that is that sometimes. Even the best of us fail when given power. I am not so sure that this is a situation where the rebellion is upset that there is a boot on their neck, isn't because they aren't wearing the boot. This is why I say take an opportunity to leave if it arises, not because I want them to fail. I just want you all to be weary that helping may just be helping some of the people of this world become that which they say they hate."
Baz, will go ask Vheld for armor and a weapon for Daisuke.

Grant has a duality in thoughts, not as distinct as Daisuke's, but still there. The training of a Lord Magi is more than just rote knowledge, there is a conditioning both physical and mental to be able to contain, withstand, and utilize magic to its fullest. This overtime changes all Lord Magi making them seem cold, remote, and overly logical. But Grant's connection to ley lines has deep roots, he felt a connection to them even as a child. Ultimately coming to the conclusion (an irrational one to many of the scholars at the University of Lazlo where he trained as a Ley Line Walker) that the lines were alive. Odin's Wells as they are called, are fundamentally abhorrent to Grant as they steal the ley lines energies and voice. He listens to Baz's conclusion that this world is a lost cause and one part of his mind had already come to that conclusion; while the other knows that he can't, won't leave without trying to save the ley lines. At the very least, he must learn the truth. Are Odin's Wells here to save this world or to destroy it.
Grant stands up after having been silent for a few minutes. "We are here, I can't in good conscious just leave without knowing the truth for myself as to the true purpose of Odin's Wells. My knowledge of parallel dimensions is limited, but with so much of this world the same, what is happening here could eventually play out in our dimension with just a slightly different set of actors. I could easily see Vheld exchanged for my 'evil'", Grant air quotes, "self, and similarly Sir Thorn for Sir Ronith. There's probably others here that could easily change the places of Corwin, Daisuke, and Keiko. We should use the opportunity to find out the truth for ourselves. If this world is a lost cause, we should be on the alert in our own dimension to stop it from gaining a foothold. What we learn may be the edge we need to win."
When the opportunity arises, Grant spends time watching his alternate's videos. He pays attention to dress, attitude, and how he interacts with others.

Even if this little plan of the resistance’s doesn’t stop them, it does provide us with a relatively safe opportunity to learn more, and to prepare our home reality against something similar happening there. He pauses and sighs, "Sir Ronith, you make the call as to who benefits and who suffers from your code. And as the arbiter of that code that is your right. The group reaches a consensus, with Ronith and Baz leaving the storeroom to track down Sir Thorn and Vheld with the group in tow. As soon as they leave the storeroom, they find six lightly armored soldiers standing outside the storeroom a good 20 feet away. Once the Heroes move out of the doorway, they all rush in and start gathering crates without a word towards the Heroes, organizing it to be moved. A keen mind could assume they were told to wait a safe distance from the door until the Heroes completed their talks.
It's a short walk to the Operation Room, and as soon as they walk in, those that can sense it feel the tug of a magical portal in the room. Everyone can see Vheld standing near a portal that has people moving through it carrying various crates. Ronith, Daisuke and Grant can all see a dark forested area on the other side and not much else, some shuffling in the leaves and voices trailing off until the portal closes. Sir Thorn is standing at the center table with Captain Howlett and Amber with what appears to be a holographic representation of the pyramid (which actually looks more like a ziggurat to those familiar). Amber is the first to look up and Thorn follows.
"Ah, I see you've made a decision?" Sir Thorn questions and flashes a toothy grin when Ronith agrees. "Excellent! The attack is in four hours; we've prepared a room where you can rest undisturbed until then. Captain Howlett has also prepared a datapad with everything we know about the target with Amber's help for you to review." Sir Thorn explains and the armored captain nods, lifting a datapad and handing it directly to Ronith.
"Room is just down this cooridor, follow me. You have freedom to return to this room or the operations room whenever you like, but please do not freely roam the facility. We have a lot of people that need to move a lot of pieces in four hours to facilitate this attack. I don't need you in the way." Howlett states, the gruff voice of a military man sounding off. He leads them to a large room that has a series of mats laid on the floor and a box of M.R.E.s (Meals-Ready-to-Eat)
To Baz, Howlett intercepts his request for armor and weapons. "Vheld's busy moving supplies to the target site, and you picked shit timing to ask for spare gear. What do you need, I might be able to scrounge up a suit of light EBA and some rifles." Howlett asks. Unless Baz tries asking for something more specific, Howlett leaves to search for just that.
Everyone has four hours to rest, prep before the mission kicks off. Something tells the heroes there won't be time to stop and smell the roses when on the other side.
What are you doing?
GM Note: The datapad reference has all the information already given, plus various defenses based on the last time the Resistance held the pyramid. Clearing the room for the soldiers to move crates around, Barracuda heads to the room to get a bit of rest. Downing an MRE before laying down on a mat, he waves Keiko over to take a nap with him. "This might be our last cuddle, Kay. What if we don't make it? I'm not letting an evil version of myself or Ronith live. That's a perversion of everything I hold dear and it won't stand."

That certainly seems odd and a little suspicious... Daisuke thinks as he slinks to the side and the soldiers rush into the storeroom they had a pow-wow in. I thought those crates were labeled with foodstuffs and different locations. Why the urgency in rushing them off somewhere?
((Prowl.

Assuming the six soldiers are trying to move as quickly as they can (and so also all depart with their crates in hand and don't leave anyone behind), and also assuming that none of the soldiers linger, staying behind, Daisuke will steal a peek back into the storeroom while devoid of the soldiers to see if they took all the crates. If so, he will move quickly to rejoin his teammates. If not, he will duck into the storeroom a moment, touch the nearest crate and assuming it weighs less than 110lbs (if soldiers don't look to be augmented for enhanced strength, seems a reasonable assumption), store that crate in his final "Instant Weapon" slot. Mere moments later, he is back in the hallway rejoining his teammates.

"I'm going to take Howlett up on his offer and wait in the Operations room... Out of the way, of course. But I am curious what else I can glean from their planned operation from there." Daisuke tells his teammates.
Daisuke will spend the 4 hours sitting quietly in the corner of the Operations Room eavesdropping and trying to piece together the operation.

Assuming there isn't a tremendous fuss about the singular missing crate he poached from the storeroom, the Arismal will spend the entirety of his 4 hours there. If there is a fuss, he will ask politely about its contents and if reasonable and necessary for the mission ((doesn't sound like it is some sort of doomsday or mass casualty device)), will produce the crate for the execution of their plan.

"Thank you," Daisuke remarks to the back of the armored captain's head, flashing him a thumbs-up he is likely not to see.
Ronith regards Baz levelly through the rest of the man’s outburst. I ask for specifics and he gives me vague philosophical ramblings? Great. After he’s finished, Ronith simply says ”If that’s all, nothing you’ve said will change my decision. You are still welcome to travel with us, but please try to keep these kinds of musings brief when we’re in the field.” Ronith will add a small, reassuring smile to take some of the bite out of his sarcasm but it is clear he considers the discussion concluded.
After they exit, Ronith’s first instinct is to help with the spare supplies. But he brings himself up short after remembering how most of the resistance fighters have reacted to him. They probably wouldn’t appreciate someone looking identical to the emperor just showing up. And they probably don’t need the help anyway. Feeling a little subdued, Ronith follows Thorn’s lead and takes up the pad. He’ll study it for a few moments, then after determining it has little new to offer hand it over to one of the others. At Daisuke’s request, Ronith nods and says ”Granted. Barracuda, go with him.”And try to keep him out of trouble. Then, after a few stretches after his bout with Thorn Ronith takes up position opposite Grant and enters a meditative trance of his own for the rest of the four hours.

Daisuke's eyes linger on the storehouse as the soldiers exit, each carrying a crate as they leave. Daisuke, peeking his head in, finds several crates still there that appear to weight and is able to successfully snatch one up. This particular crate has a destination on it: Asia. Though Daisuke can't figure out what the sudden rush is on supplies supposedly going to different continents than the attack, he takes the crate anyways and the group winds up alone in the prep room. While there, a few partake in the M.R.E.s and find them to be the same bland taste anyone who's had them remembers; they all seem to taste like chicken. Grant meditates while Ronith sits and studies the datapad, Baz and Keiko remaining in the prep room while Daisuke and Barracuda head up.
Barracuda and Daisuke find themselves in the Operations Room, doing their best to stay out of the way while everyone else is inside the prep room. While in the operations room, Daisuke notices a few nuggests. There is a chest that is near Vheld that he seems to be going to and withdrawing a small item before each portal he opens; and he's opening several to transport multiple groups. The Arismal is able to guess that the external attack will have three major points, judging from the talk. Two that focus on hitting it while the third breaches. Daisuke and Barracuda hears a random soldier run up to Howlett and explain a that there is a missing crate and while neither Hero is 100% sure, they think Howlett tosses a glance towards them before waving off the soldier. Daisuke could guess that his alternate self might have similar powers that the resistance is aware of; though it certainly doesn't seem to be causing anyone any alarm that the crate is gone. (If Daisuke examines said crate in the prep room, he'll find it contains a small locked box that seems to have loose items inside it and a lot of M.R.E.s)
About an hour later [two hours into it], Howlett approaches Daisuke and Barracuda in the Operations room with a tough-box in hand. "Light EBA, best we could scrounge up that isn't being used. Also a couple rifle, a few spare e-clips." Howlett says and notably doesn't comment or ask about said crate.
Daisuke finds a CA-4 Dead Boy equivalent EBA with the skull face either washed or rubbed off. And a pair of CP-40 Pule Laser Rifle equivalents with six extra standard eclips.
During the remaining time, Daisuke and Barracuda observe that these alternate I.D.s truly appear to be opposites of the ones they remember. This Thorn appears to care and while it's hard to say regarding Vheld, it does appear they are in earnest in their efforts to save the world not destroy it. Both Heroes can hear varied arguments about which pyramid would've been a better choice, with some of the more extremists lamenting the Merctown Pyramid isn't the target and some of the more pragmatic enthused.
The Heroes are collectively alerted at 15 minutes til kick-off and meet in the Operations Room. Upon arrival, they see everyone from the initial line up in full combat gear, plus several more they are struggling to recognize. There appears to be quite a few cyborgs and Grant can feel a powerful swelling of magic from one of the women behind Will, as well as a couple others. Thorn introduces the teams as the Spook Squad and the Roughnecks, Thorn and Will each appearing as the respective leaders.
After a round of introductions, Vheld opens a portal. "It's time." The mage states and then ushers the groups on through.
[The Storm]
The sun hasn't risen yet, though everyone can feel/see the environmental change. From a cold underground tomb to a dark tropical forest. It remains dark and Thorn gives the sign to keep lights off. "Watch the magic happen. Amber and Howlett are going to begin the attack, then we move. Spooks will place the first charge. Heroes will place the second. Roughnecks will hold our exfil and assist." Thorn states and hands (someone) a small box device that is no larger than a box of M.R.E.s, though it has a slight hum to it. "Simple to set. They sync. We jet. They blow and take the Well with it." Thorn explains and everyone finds the sequence to set easy to understand.
Moments after the explanation, an earth rumbling explosion takes place, then another, and another. All of them appear to be on different sides of the pyramid and an immediate alarm blankets the area. Grant has one of his earlier fears realized as it seems this pyramid has improved since the Resistance attacked last time. Baz and Grant both feel muted as an Anti-Magic Cloud seems to surround the pyramid.
Fortunately the resistance doesn't rely on magic and more explosions rock the side of the pyramid with Thorn then calling out. "Follow! Our breach point is made!" Thorn leads the groups inside a small hole in the side of the pyramid and once inside, Grant and Baz both feel their connection to magic re-established as though they were on a Ley Line Nexus. Notably, none of the ambient magic seems to be leaving the pyramid. Once inside, Thorn turns to Ronith and gives him a toothy grin before leading the spooks towards the right (east) and pointing them towards the left (west).
There doesn't appear to be anyone in the immediate vicinity, though a type of raid alarm is blaring and the sound of the yelling of orders and preparation can be heard further inside the pyramid. Anyone with Sixth Sense feels the the back of the hairs stand and can assess they don't have long to move. The Roughnecks appear to be bunkering down at the breach point.

Daisuke keeps maintaining the presence of the squirrel on his shoulder and continually updates his copy of its alertness throughout. Much of the time waiting in the Operations room, his furry companion is quietly napping on the Arismal's shoulder.
Zoe wrote: ↑Sun Sep 24, 2023 7:02 pmDaisuke could guess that his alternate self might have similar powers that the resistance is aware of; though it certainly doesn't seem to be causing anyone any alarm that the crate is gone. (If Daisuke examines said crate in the prep room, he'll find it contains a small locked box that seems to have loose items inside it and a lot of M.R.E.s)
Interesting. Daisuke thinks to himself. They are aware that the Asia crate that they needed to urgently recover from the storage room is missing. And yet its absence is not causing any alarm. Perhaps its contents are not as important to the mission as I initially suspected. Or perhaps it is considered to be an acceptable loss because of the high likelihood of failure in its execution. I certainly need to discover its contents.
Once in the prep room, Daisuke will produce the MRE crate from his Instant Weapon dimension and explain to any H4H teammates present. "When the soldiers rushed into the storeroom immediately after our departure to rush the crates off somewhere, I thought that suspicious. So I snuck one of them to assess their contents. I suspect that it may be some manner of explosives hidden within foodstuffs."
When proven wrong, Daisuke manages a soft, "Huh. Guess I was wrong" while turning the small locked box with loose items inside it in his hand. "Seems I have made a mistake and unless any of you object, I will go rectify my error immediately." He will quickly repackage the box within the crate, stow the crate in his Instant Weapon dimension, and return to the Operations room to address Howlett.
"My sincerest apologies and I hope it is not too late. I thought it suspicious when your men removed the MRE crates with great haste and urgency immediately after we stepped out of the storage room. So I spirited one away Asia crate to investigate what could have been so important." Daisuke then produces the missing MRE crate. "I wish to return it to you and wonder if there is anything I can do to expedite the return of its contents. I did not open the locked box. But could clearly see that there was nothing nefarious within the crate. I hope my actions did not compromise the mission." Should he be tasked by Howlett, Daisuke will do what the commander asks.
Zoe wrote: ↑Sun Sep 24, 2023 7:02 pmAbout an hour later [two hours into it], Howlett approaches Daisuke and Barracuda in the Operations room with a tough-box in hand.
"Thank you greatly. I appreciate the generosity." Daisuke nods in graciousness to Howlett. He will return to the prep room to don the armor and weapons ((he will store one CP-40 in his last Instant weapon slot)). Once suited, he will return to the Operations room and resume his observation.

Daisuke allows either Sir Ronith or Grant to take lead on counter introductions ((or perhaps none is necessary due to circumstances)) and will fall in as per either Sir Ronith or Grant's orders. When the portal opens the Arismal will head through in formation.

Daisuke (now dressed in CA-4 equivalent armor similar to other resistance members and brandishing a CP-40 laser rifle) quickly dismisses his squirrel friend for its safety. He then looks toward Sir Ronith for orders but otherwise stays alert for possible ambush locations and hidden things that might also be a hazard to their advancing squad.

Grant's eyes open and takens in the bustle as everyone is in the last stages of getting ready. He gets up off the floor and picks up the blanket he'd used as a cushion and places it back on a shelf. He asks those in the Operation room to confirm how soldiers in the Omega Guards and Vanguard address subordinates and superiors. We will need to be brusk and demanding, this is a military organization accustomed to taking orders He says to his team, "While it would be useful to erect mental defenses to prevent our minds being read, we probably just need to be on guard for mental easedroping. Instead we will need to use our own abilities to pick useful details out of the minds of the people we meet as we try to make our way to the target so we can maintain our ruse."
The Roughnecks and Spook Squad are both new to Grant, he takes care to take in their appearance and names, storing them in his memory. Knowing these people will be useful if/when we return home. He greats them all giving a variation of, "Thank you for helping us get home, we hope that our efforts will help you save your world as well."
[The Storm]
The Lord Magi waits patiently once through the portal, using his magical senses to get the lay of the land, which direction the ley lines run, where nearby nexi are located. The appearance of the dark black cloud of magical negation overhead causes him to frown. We had the advantage of surprise and potentially gave it up with the casting of the cloud. He unslings the NEMA PR-470 he had acquired while in the past, Without magic, I will have to keep this near for any close encounters. Knowing that psionics won't be impeded, Grant activates both Empathy (6 ISP | RUE 172 | 40 min | 200' area) and Telepathy (4 ISP | RUE 177 | 40 min | 120' Surface Thoughts, 1000' Two Way Telepathic)
Their apparent following ease at making it into the pyramid, troubles Grant though. Is this a trap of our own making? Is the resistance really just another arm of the Emperor here to ferret out those that oppose him? We will need to be wary. The feel of the mana returned inside the pyramid and despite his misgivings, a sense of relief comes over him. "Baz, Keiko, soak up as much of the mana as you can, I will do the same." He turns to Sir Ronith, "With magic available, do you want to pause long enough for me to cast any spells. It would be less protective and a shorter duration if I cast Armor of Ithan on all of us, but it is invisible. Or do you want something more flashy like Invincible Armor?"
Based on Sir Ronith's answer, Grant casts the appropriate spells and then begins absorbing the energy from the nexus (40 PPE per 15 seconds) as they move towards their destination. Grant also checks the walls for runes and other magical markings for anything of significance.

Ronith eyes Daisuke stonily during the Arismal’s big reveal, and he conceals the mirth from his voice when he responds in a level tone. ”Yes, you should do that.” When Grant adds a bit about psionics, Ronith nods his agreement. ”Keep psionics as an option for as long as possible. I can erect a mind block over the entire squad if we come under mental attack.” For his part Ronith merely checks his weapons, suits up, and gets what rest he can before it’s time to move.
When it is, the cyber-knight is conflicted. He knows it makes sense to command his team as its own unit, similar to the others. But it will also be that much easier to leave us behind. When the breach explosion goes off, he takes a moment to enhance his reflexes ((-10 ISP)) before following Thorn and the others in. When it’s time to take possession of the explosives, Ronith takes the small box and looks it over with a cool professionalism. Probably not big enough to be some sort of sophisticated trap. Still, we may need Daisuke to portal us out of here in a hurry. After a moment’s hesitation, Ronith slips the explosive device into one of his belt pouches, then he unsheathes his swords. He'll check them again once inside, but unless they appear to be seriously weakened by the outpouring of magic he will keep his psi-swords in reserve.

Ronith frowns and considers for a few moments. ”I am reluctant to rely too heavily upon, or invest too much in, magical defenses in this place. Keep it light- we need to get moving and stay that way.” Turning to address the team, Ronith points and issues marching orders. ”We advance in pairs as space permits. I shall take point. Barracuda, you’re with me. Then Keiko and Baz. Grant and Daisuke bring up the rear. If something goes sideways, with this mission or our allies or this place, we may need to ‘port out of here in a hurry so be ready. Make your preparations and let’s get this over with.” When the others are ready, Ronith activates his magic ring to create multiple images of himself, and leads towards the first intersection with blades drawn.
Drawn from his relaxing time with Keiko, Corwin does his best to observe operations from a distance. Hearing about the missing crate, he shrugs and says to Daisuke "Stuff goes missing all the time. One clerical error is all it takes. I'm sure it's no big deal."
Howlett gives Daisuke the spare gear and Barracuda nods his thanks. "I need this one to make it home. Did you know he can make squirrels appear? Totally bizarre."
Come time to begin the mission, Barracuda makes sure King Tide is strapped to his back with the tendrils of his Wave Strider armor before he heads out. Willing the helmet to take its place, he leads with Ronith as they round the corner to the first intersection.
