Background Story
The day before Corporal Edward Vaughn was supposed to ship home from his fourth and what was intended to be his last tour in Vietnam, he got a letter. It was supposed to have arrived weeks earlier.

His wife informed him that she was leaving him for some guy named Joaquin. She was taking their 2-month old daughter--who he hadn't even held yet--with them. She said he may as well take the Army's offer for a promotion if he reenlisted. It was where he belonged, she said.

Edward went home with a dangerous mix of anger, confusion, and depression swirling in his head. He was welcomed by a wall of protesters at the airport, calling him baby killer and spitting at him. One of them splattered a bucket of red paint all over his dress uniform. He would never bother cleaning the silver star he wore home that day.

He went home to find it cleaned out. No letter. No forwarding address or number. That night he got out his sidearm and put it in his mouth. After a good two minutes of indecision, he decided to go get a drink.

A gaunt, rough looking stranger wearing a biker cut sat in the stool next to his at the bar. His name was Sam, a fellow vet. After a few rounds and more than a few war stories between cursing out hippies, the stranger asked a question out of nowhere. "Do you really want to die."

The next three days were a blur. Edward's next conscious thought came when he clawed his way out of a shallow grave. He'd been buried in his dress uniform, medals and all. Sam was laughing triumphantly as he showed him a young woman hog tied at his feet. She was the protestor who threw paint on him. That was his first taste of blood.

In the midst of feasting, he stopped and scrambled away in horror with the sudden realization of what he'd just done. Sam looked as freaked out as he was. Sam demanded him to continue feeding, to which Edward told him to f*&$ off.

A fight ensued. It didn't go the way Sam thought it would, especially after having a silver star literally shoved down his throat. Edward had no idea how he knew to do this, but he dragged Sam to the street that ran outside the graveyard, plopped him in front of a fire hydrant, and ripped the cap off with his bare hands.

After taking time to wrap his mind around what he had become, he managed to find his way into the Nocturnes. They helped set him up with a new identity. They faked Edward Vaughn's death so that his daughter wouldn't think he had deserted her. As grateful as he was, he had no real interest in anything to do with the Night Lords. He'd seen enough of war. Though now that he knew what the world was really like, he trained and geared up accordingly, and maintained good relations with the Nocturnes so he'd stay in the know.

Eddie was still only really good at one thing, though, so he ended up working for the mob.

He eventually found his daughter, Katie. He knew better than to try to establish any kind of relationship with her, but he kept tabs on her. When she moved to Washington DC to work at the EPA, he moved there, too. He got a job as muscle for a local weapons dealer who gets his supply from the Warlords and sells to the local gangs.

Then the pandemic happened.
